Dr. Kristin Haglund named next Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Endowed Chair

Sept. 9, 2021

Dr. Kristin HaglundMILWAUKEE — Kristin Haglund Ph.D., RN, professor of nursing and director of the Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program, has been named the next Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Endowed Chair, Provost Kimo Ah Yun announced today. The Raynor Chair is awarded on a rotating three-year cycle to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies research excellence and scholarly leadership in pursuit of the university mission.

Haglund is the first Raynor Chair since 2015 when the program was paused to allow its endowment to grow.

“Dr. Haglund has an exemplary record of scholarship, and her body of research has advanced her discipline and the Marquette mission in meaningful ways,” Provost Ah Yun said. “As Raynor Chair, Dr. Haglund will be able to elevate her work to the benefit of our students, faculty and the broader community. I couldn’t be more excited for her to take on this new role.”

The Raynor Chair receives a stipend of $20,000 and up to $30,000 in operating or equipment funds each year to support their research program. It is expected that part of the operating budget will be used to execute the recipient’s planned research leadership activities.

As Raynor Chair, Haglund says she aims to increase Marquette’s reputation as a leader in community engaged scholarship, a continuation of the work she began in 2019 as Provost Office Fellow to elevate and formalize faculty training for CES, working closely with Dr. Dan Bergen, executive director of community engagement, and Kim Bohat, director of service learning.

In her nomination letter for Haglund, Dr. Janet Wessel Krejci, RN, NEA-BC, dean of the College of Nursing, wrote: “The work that Dr. Haglund has been doing is exactly what Marquette University wants to do, needs to do, and is committed to doing, to live its mission. Dr. Haglund’s track record of working with the community, obtaining grants to do so, and disseminating her results, almost always with students, is beyond exemplary.”

A Family Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ANCC), Haglund has served children and families who are marginalized and oppressed. While she has utilized a variety of research methodologies, she is a community-engaged researcher specialized in qualitative and arts-based methods and interventions.

Her research program has generated knowledge and interventions to facilitate optimal health and psychosocial outcomes for children and adolescents at risk due to poverty, discrimination and/or chronic conditions. Her research studies build on the strengths of populations to promote positive youth development, healthy interpersonal relationships, violence prevention and risk behavior reduction among other topics.

Haglund has received numerous accolades and appointments for her work as a nursing researcher. Since 2019, she has been a Provost Office Fellow and Community Engagement Faculty Member. That same year, she earned Marquette’s Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Faculty Award, and in 2017 the Community Engaged Research Partnership Award. Also in 2017, MCN: The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing honored her with a Research Paper of the Year Award for “Introducing Allergenic Food into Infants’ Diet: A Systematic Review,” Delta Gamma At Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International named her Nurse Researcher of the Year Award, and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin awarded her the Julie Lathrop Nursing Research Award.

Haglund has a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Marquette, a Master of Science in nursing from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Past Raynor Chairs include Dr. Andrew Williams, College of Engineering; Dr. Madeline Wake, College of Nursing; Dr. Bill Cullinan, College of Health Sciences; Dr. Jack Winters, College of Engineering; and Dr. Quentin Quade, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.
