What started as an idea at the Vatican made its way to Marquette University in fall of 2023 as we hosted the Sport at the Service of Humanity Conference. Now, see how we're keeping the conversation going about the intersections of faith, humanity and sports.

THE CONVERSATION CONTINUES

Student Sport Summit

In fall 2024, Marquette will host the Student Sport Summit, which will inform students of career opportunities in the sports industry and connect them with regional and statewide sports organizations.

Milwaukee Sport Collective

The Milwaukee Sports Collective launched in early 2024. The digital platform facilitates dialogue between the sports and faith communities in the greater Milwaukee area.

Rabbi on the Sidelines

Rabbi Erez Sherman first met Rev. Patrick Kelly, S.J., author of Play, Sport, and Spirit, at the 2023 Sport at the Service of Humanity Conference at Marquette. In this podcast, they continue the conversation on the roles of sport, theology and spirituality.

ABOUT SPORT AT THE SERVICE OF HUMANITY

Sport at the Service of Humanity was launched by His Holiness Pope Francis during the 2016 Global Conference on Faith and Sport at the Vatican. Sport at the Service of Humanity is the only global faith and sport movement that combines the passion of sport with the values and power of faith to serve humanity.

“Live Like We Play” embodies the movement’s ethos – rooted in Pope Francis’ inspirational words — “Challenge yourself in the game of life, as you do in the game of sport.” Sport for Humanity’s beliefs and aspirations are founded on three pillars — inspiration, inclusion and involvement — and six principles — compassion, love, respect, enlightenment, balance and joy.

2023 SPORT AT THE SERVICE OF HUMANITY CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Since 2016, regional Sport at the Service of Humanity conferences were held in 2017 at Villanova University, 2018 at Loyola Marymount University and 2019 at Georgetown University. In 2023, Marquette was the fourth U.S. institution to host the conference.

The conference brought together regional and national leaders in athletics, education, business, faith and sport to harness our collective powers to effect positive change in society. Dynamic speakers, panel discussions and breakout groups focused on building upon existing structures to use the collaborative strength of faith and sport for good while generating new ideas and identifying ways to further the Sport for Humanity mission.
