Dr. William Henk serves as dean of the College of Education and Professor of Literacy at Marquette University. Dr. Henk served as Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 2001 to 2004. Prior to that appointment, he spent 10 years as a faculty member and another nine years as Director of the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education at Penn State Harrisburg. He received his doctorate in Reading and Educational Psychology from West Virginia University in 1982, then moved on to the University of Georgia as an Assistant Professor. Before obtaining his doctoral degree, Bill was an elementary school reading specialist.
Dr. Henk specializes in reading and language studies. His research interests include reader and writer self-perceptions, classroom literacy supervision, and the neuropsychology of reading. He has published over 100 articles in peer reviewed education journals in addition to having made numerous national conference presentations.
Over the years, Bill has served on several university governance and service groups and as a leader in various professional literacy organizations. He has been Chair of the Publications Committee of the International Reading Association (IRA), and he is currently a reviewer for Reading Research Quarterly, the Journal of Literacy Research, and The Reading Teacher. He has served as a member of the College Reading Association (CRA) Executive Board as well as Chair of its Publications Committee, and he co-edited the association’s journal, Reading Research and Instruction.
CRA recognized Dr. Henk with a Service Award in 2003 and with a Lifetime Achievement award in 2004. In 1991, he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Penn State Harrisburg, and in 2000, he received that institution’s Excellence in Research Award as well as the Edinboro University (PA) Outstanding Alumni Award.
Community Service is important to Bill, and he serves on the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Academy of Science and the Milwaukee Tennis and Education Foundation (MTEF) as well as the Archbishop's Advisory Committee for Catholic Schools. He is also active in the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), serving on its Leadership Team, its Partners Group, and its Metropolitan Milwaukee Academy of Deans of Education (MMADE).
