NEWS FOR PARENTS

Revised identification procedures required for access to student records

In order to comply with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations, students must grant their parents permission to access their financial and enrollment records.

Beginning this month, parents must provide the student’s MUID number and a new, four-digit Marquette Central Access Number (MCAN) when requesting information by phone or in person from the offices of the Bursar, Financial Aid or Registrar. The MCAN is available in a student’s CheckMarq account.

The information available includes tuition, fees, financial aid and academic records, with the exception of the schedule of classes or any activity related to grades.

Students may still grant online access to their financial and academic records to parents or others following the guest access procedures outlined in CheckMarq. This enables parents or others to access information online 24/7.

Students are cautioned to be careful about whom they disclose their MCAN and/or MUID numbers to, as personal information about their finances and academic records should be guarded.

H1N1 Vaccine Update

In mid-October Marquette Student Health Service received a small initial shipment of the H1N1 vaccine. Consistent with public health guidelines, students working in clinical health care settings were offered the first wave of vaccine; most eligible students were vaccinated if they chose to do so.

Student Health Service has now depleted this initial shipment and is in contact with state and local health officials regarding a timeline for receiving more vaccine.

Marquette hopes to offer the vaccine to the broad student population through additional clinic offerings; however, this is dependent on future shipments. As supply of the vaccine fluctuates nationwide, this timeline is still uncertain. The CDC recently removed healthy 18-24-year-olds from its priority list until vaccine quantities are more stable, which could affect the timing of additional vaccine allocation to Marquette.

Students with underlying medical conditions or who otherwise fall under CDC priority groups are being encouraged to check with local health departments or their personal health care providers for vaccine availability.

More than 2,000 students received the seasonal flu vaccine at clinics held on campus throughout September, October and earlier this week. Student Health Service has a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine still available; students should call SHS for an appointment.

Parents are reminded that students should stay home from class, work or campus activities if they become ill with flu-like symptoms, until they are fever-free for 24 hours. Check the SHS Web site for continued updates.

Shuttles to train and bus stations for Thanksgiving break

Public Safety will provide shuttles to the Amtrak and Greyhound/Megabus stations for Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving Dinner at Marquette

Students who aren’t going home for the holidays are invited to a Thanksgiving meal arranged by Marquette’s Campus Ministry with the assistance of Residence Life and Sodexo. This annual event started more than fifty years ago by Rev. William “Mac” McEvoy, S.J., and Campus Ministry is proud to continue the tradition.

The meal will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26, at Cobeen Hall Dining Room, with a menu that includes turkey, vegetables, fish, rice, vegetables, deserts, beverages and other fixings. The dinner is free, but tickets are required and must be picked up by Friday, Nov. 20, in Campus Ministry’s office in the Alumni Memorial Union.
