About Córdoba

The city of Córdoba is located in Andalusia, the southern region of Spain. This city was founded by the Romans and quickly became a major European center of importance because of its location on the Guadalquivir River. After Rome's hold on Córdoba ended, the Moors controlled the city, during which period the city’s most notable monument, the mosque La Mezquita, was built for Islamic worship. When Christians retook Córdoba in 1236, the grand structure was adapted to become the city’s cathedral. Unique in Europe, this church-mosque is the third largest in the world and has been declared a world heritage site.

Other important sights are located in La Juderia, the old Jewish Quarters where a Jewish Synagogue still stands, and the Fortress of the Catholic Monarchs, which boasts beautiful gardens and Arabic baths. Nowhere else in the world do the cultures of Christianity, Islam and Judaism stand side-by-side as they do in Córdoba.

Córdoba is a festive city, with activities and attractions throughout the year. The most famous ones are the Holy Week at Easter, the Fiesta de Patios (a contest for the most beautifully decorated courtyard), Cruces, during which time the town is decorated with crosses and many flowers; and the Nuestra Señora de la Salud Fair.

Those who love the heat may find their utopia in Córdoba. Known for being one of the hottest cities in Spain, Córdoba's temperatures are extremely hot during the summer but become more temperate during the rest of the year.
