Eichstätt is a popular vacation area in the nature preserve Altmühltal. The city has been able to retain its traditional baroque feeling by preserving magnificent churches, sights, and museums. It has also developed modern architecture that has won numerous awards in Europe, and its southern European flair offers students many leisure activities and diverse cultural festivities and events.
Ingolstadt, located twenty-seven kilomometers southwest of Eichstätt, is an old Bavarian city that has preserved its rich history. The city has narrow, medieval alleys, and the heart of the city has a geometric form typical of 13th century work. It once was a Bavarian duke residence, a state fortress, and the seat of the first Bavarian state university. The city today has a population of about 115,000 people and harbors such historic sights as the late gothic era Church of Our Lady and a 15th Century castle. Ingolstadt's cultural life also thrives - numerous concerts, museums, theater festivals, and jazz and Cabaret festivals entertain Ingolstadt residents and visitors.
Students will find leisure activities readily accessible in Ingolstadt. Everything from basketball courts to golf courses are conveniently located within the city, and with rowing on the Danube, sailing on the nearby lakes, and skiing and snowboarding in the Alps, there is something to please every sports fanatic. For those who love the great outdoors, Germany’s largest nature reserve, Atmühltal, is just to the north of Ingolstadt. Visitors who prefer the city life can explore Münich, located less than one hour's drive to the south.
