About Sonderborg

Sonderborg was originally developed around a 13th century castle and was part of the duchy of Schleswig.  Presently, Sonderborg's 30,000 residents make it the largest town in Denmark.  The older section of the city is on Als Island but is currently connected by a bridge to the newer section on Jylland.  Sonderborg is a port, an industrial and commercial center, but is also a seaside resort.

The city itself offers many activities for students. The city has a friendly, quiet atmosphere but is filled with a large student population, making the social scene youthful and lively. The city center has a bustling pedestrian area and many attractive shops and bars. Outside the city center, the sea, the beach, and the woods offer a great many possibilities for recreational activities.

Transportation

Denmark has a highly developed and efficient public transportation system.

Denmark is also the only Scandinavian country connected to the European mainland: the southern border of the Jutland touches Germany.  Otherwise, Denmark is an island kingdom. Bicycles (which outnumber the people) are the preferred method of transportation throughout the country, including the cities. Furthermore, public transportation networks of trains, buses, planes, and ferries cover most of the country. You can get a ticket to cover bus/train rides at reduced fares, as well as a monthly bus pass.

Climate

The winters in Denmark are relatively mild, with average temperatures around 35° F.  In the summer months, average temperatures are around 70° F. A raincoat is recommended for summer, and a jacket will be needed during fall and winter.
