Frequently Asked Questions about Study in Cordoba, Spain

Requirements

Who can study there?

Students who are majoring in either Economics or Business with Junior standing and who have strong Spanish language skills (9 credits beyond SPAN 004 or 010) may apply.

What are the programs dates?

The fall term runs from late September to mid February, while the spring term run from mid-February to early July.

Do I need to know Spanish?

Yes. All courses are taught in Spanish, the national language, and you are required to complete 9 credits beyond SPAN 004 or SPAN 010 before enrolling in this program. However, you may be able to find a few courses in English.

Will my financial aid transfer? 

Because this is a Marquette-exchange program, most financial aid generally applies. To learn more about how this program will affect your specific financial aid package, please see the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Do I need a visa? How do I get a visa?

Yes, you will need to apply for your visa three months in advance. Contact the Consulate General of Spain in Chicago.

Do I need vaccinations before I travel?

Visit the Center for Disease Control's Traveler's Health Web site and/or International SOS for vaccination information.

About the Program

Who will my classmates be?

Local students and other international students.

How many classes are taken per semester, on average?

On average, you will take five classes per semester.

How many credits can I earn?

This number of classes usually equates to around 15–18 credits.

What subjects are offered?

Economics, Business, Business Law, Marketing, Finance, Management, International Business, Ethics, and Spanish for foreigners are a few.  A complete list of classes will be available when you apply.

Will my grades transfer? What are passing grades?

Grades do not transfer, only credits. ETEA grades on a 10-point basis, with 10 being the highest.  In order to gain transfer credit, you will need to obtain a score of 5 or better, with 5 equal to a C, 7 a B, 8 an AB, and 9-10 an A at Marquette.

Where will I live?

The campus at Cordoba is much smaller and somewhat different than Marquette.  Similar to a commuter college in the US, there are no dormitories. Most students live at home, and a few rent apartments or flats. You will live in an apartment or shared flat, which the university will help you attain. Contact Dr. Hosseini for more detailed information.

Is there an orientation?

Yes, the International Office of ETEA organizes a orientation program for students of the first semester or for the complete year, in which the following activities take place:

  • Information about class timetables and exam calendar
  • Academic guidance
  • General info about Spain and Córdoba
  • Assistance with accommodation arrangements
  • Organization of extra-curricular activities with students of GRUPO EUROPA

About the City

What is public transportation like?

Public transportation in Córdoba is a networks of buses that cover most of the city.

How do I get around?

Córdoba enjoys a good location since it can be easily reached by road and train and it is very close to famous cities such as Seville, Granada, and Málaga. Madrid, the capital of Spain, is only 2 hours away by high-speed train.

What is the weather like?

Temperatures are much more mild and constant in Spain than Wisconsin.  While the winters do get cold, the temperatures usually do not go below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  Also, rain is extremely common, so it is vital that you bring an umbrella and a raincoat.

What is the cost of living compared to the United States?

The Euro is the acceptable currency in Spain. As of June 2005, the exchange rate was 1.00 USD for 0.83 Euros. In comparison to the United States, Córdoba is relatively cheaper.

How can I find out more about the city?

Located in the south of Spain, Córdoba is the capital of the Córdoba Province in Andalucía. It is one of Spain's most famous cities and it retains in its older sections the whitewashed walls, narrow streets, and colorful patios of a Moorish city. Córdoba is a trade center for the olives and citrus fruit produced nearby and also has many manufacturing industries. Products include processed food, beer, textiles, machinery, and refined copper. A variety of handcrafted items, especially silver and leather goods, are also produced chiefly to be sold to the many tourists who visit the city. Program-specific applications are due by March 1 for the year-long, and October 1 for the spring semester.
