What is public transportation like?
The city has a modern, clean bus network, an efficient, simple metro system and a new tram network. Although locals may complain about the occasional lateness of buses or the rush-hour crowds on the metro, the quality of public transport in Lyon is comparatively high on a European scale, and its use is generally a stress-free experience.
How do I get around?
The most satisfying way to see the city is by foot. The main sights are all accessible by foot, and central Lyon covers a relatively small area – although it does include some rather steep hills.
To travel to another country, the train is usually the most convenient and inexpensive method, and Lyon has 2 major train stations, as well as several minor ones.
What is the weather like?
The weather is in general warmer than in Milwaukee. The average temperature for the year is 52°F, with highs around 69°F in July and lows around 37°F in January. While snowfall is rare, rain is a frequent occurrence. An umbrella and a rain jacket are essential items. For cold weather, however, a regular winter jacket is enough.
What is the cost of living compared to the United States?
The Euro is the only acceptable currency in France. As of June 2005, the exchange rate was 1.00 USD for 0.83 Euros. In comparison to the United States, Lyon is fairly comparable.
How can I find out more about the city?
Lyon is a fascinating city, providing a glimpse into the region's Roman imperial history simultaneously with a very modern French feel. For more information, see Fodor's online guide.
