Although the University of Innsbruck's roots are traced to a 16th century secondary school founded by the Jesuits, the university was officially founded in 1669 by Emperor Leopold I. Eight years later, an official charter was signed and four faculties of higher learning were founded. Turmoil and change characterized the next 150 years and twice the University was closed and reopened. In 1826 the University saw the final reopening of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Law by Emperor Franz I. Other faculties were reopened to make University of Innsbruck the institution it is today.
Today, University of Innsbruck has over 28,000 students,
of which over 1,000 are international students. The Extension Center,
a service and public information office, cultivates contacts with the
community for the economic use of research results and informs the
media.
There is an orientation shortly after arriving in Innsbruck followed
by an enthusiastic welcome party, aka Stammitisch. The Stammitisch
occurs every week as means of meeting for all international students
in Innsbruck.
