Rome is one of the most historically significant
cities in the world. At every turn, visitors walk back thousands
of years to the greatest days of the Roman Empire’s supremacy.
As the imperial capital, Rome became the site of glorious palaces,
temples, theaters and stadiums, and the ruins of some of these magnificent
structures stand today. Students can explore the Colosseum, Pantheon
and the
Roman Forum, buildings which date back to the first century. At the majestic St. Peter's Basilica, they can behold Renaissance
masterworks by Michelangelo, Raphael and Donato Bramante.
It is alongside these edifices of the past that Rome built itself
into a significant metropolis of the future. Modern apartments, villas
and shops blend harmoniously with its historical sites. The city, now populated by more than two million
people, is also a thriving cultural center with an opera, folk and rock concerts,
art museums
and sporting events.
Students will appreciate that Rome is located in the center of the
country, just a train ride away from Naples and Milan. Rome is also
the capital of the Catholic Church; it surrounds the Vatican City (shown
above), where the pope makes public appearances weekly.
