From its founding in 1881 as a college, Marquette University has evolved into one of the largest Jesuit universities comprising 11 colleges and professional schools serving 11,500 students.

Just as the ownership, size and complexity of the institution have changed over the past 125 years, the governance pattern has moved toward increased faculty collaboration, particularly in recent decades as a larger number of lay faculty have joined a decreasing number of Jesuits in carrying out the mission of the university.

Marquette University's University Academic Senate (UAS) serves as a deliberative body with responsibilities for academic policy formulation of an all-university character and for the review and evaluation of academic programs and academic planning.
