Progress Report for May 1, 2013

The Reaffirmation Initiative

Marquette University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an agent of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Marquette University voluntarily goes through the peer reaffirmation process that includes preparation of a self-study followed by a campus visit every 10 years. The next campus visit and review will take place September 30 – October 2, 2013.

The present reaffirmation initiative has been conceptualized as a means to tell Marquette’s story and in doing so to document, using evidence, the ways in which we meet and exceed stated criteria. This is also a moment to reflect on what we do and how we do it in order to identify areas where we can grow, excel and lead. As such, the theme for the present initiative is Reflect - Affirm - Inspire.

Second Quarter 2013 Goals

Three goals were established for the second quarter of 2013. Each is listed along with a progress report.

Synthesize feedback for use in self-study revision.

Feedback was obtained from several sources and media. Almost 100 comments were received from faculty, staff, and students through the online feedback mechanism. Feedback was also obtained during five in-person listening sessions hosted by reaffirmation initiative co-chairs Drs. Meyer and Peters. Additional feedback was received from several committees on campus including the University Assessment Committee, the University Board of Undergraduate Studies, the Committee on Teaching, the Committee on Academic Policies and Issues, the Faculty Council, and the Marquette University Student Government. Finally, feedback was obtained from two HLC peer review consultants who visited campus on April 10, 2013 and met with the Deans’ Council, the President’s Cabinet, and the Reaffirmation Steering Committee, among others.

Begin revising self-study.

The editing and production team has begun revising the self-study. The team will incorporate feedback from the various sources identified above to create two documents that will be sent electronically to the Higher Learning Commission by the end of July. One document will be text only and the second will include images. The latter document will be used to create hard copies for internal constituents.

Prepare for fall 2013 site visit.

The Communication and Site Visit Subcommittee has begun preparing for the fall visit. They are developing a coordinated communication campaign that will inform campus and ensure logistics around the visit meet expectations. Meetings with faculty and staff will be organized once the site visit team chair has been selected by the Higher Learning Commission. Reaffirmation co-chairs, Drs. Meyer and Peters, will visit with multiple academic and non-academic areas to review self-study findings, distribute materials, and remind constituents about the site visit and HLC team expectations.

Third Quarter 2013 Goals

  • Finalize and deliver self-study to HLC review team.
  • Develop self-study executive summary.
  • Prepare campus for review team visit.
