2018 Marquette Christmas Greeting Video

What is your most cherished Christmas tradition?
Attending Midnight Mass? A holiday meal? The star on top of the Christmas tree?

Among our many traditions at Marquette University is giving thanks for the students who constantly bring new life and energy to our campus, for the faculty and staff who challenge our students to reach new levels of achievement and create an incredible environment in which they can learn, for our Jesuits who illuminate our path, and for our alumni and friends who want to ensure the unique education available at Marquette continues to grow and thrive in the 21st century.

Marquette Comm magazine: Alumnae open up about their careers as women in sports journalism

Although women are still underrepresented in sports journalism, Marquette women have achieved prominence in the field. Whether playing pioneering roles in the field or using sports as a prism for contemplating life’s larger issues, they find solidarity amid a changing environment for women covering sports — improving but not there yet.

“People are going to tell you all the time that you have the coolest job,” says USA Today veteran Nancy Armour, CJPA '91. “And they’re right.”

Marquette grad and husband offer motorcycle therapy trips in Africa

A motorcycle trip aimed at healing emotional wounds falls into the broad category of what’s sometimes called “adventure therapy” or experiences that challenge physical endurance and the human spirit. Laura Wille Councill, Arts '95, and her husband, Andrew Councill, are now organizing motorcycle therapy trips in Africa.

"I have dedicated my life, as many do in their own way, to leaving the world a little better,” Laura said. “Maybe my Midwestern upbringing, or my education at Marquette, perhaps the Jesuit ideals of being ‘men and women for others,’ best expresses my motivations.”

December reflection and prayer: A season of hope

By Rev. Frederick Zagone, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry

It seems like weeks since we have seen the sun on the Marquette campus. But last night was the lighting of the Christmas tree outside the Alumni Memorial Union. A few sightings of snow remind us that winter is here. I long await the arrival of December 21 because the days begin to get longer. Just four days before Christmas is the hope of new life and the promise of new light.

The winter solstice is celebrated by many people because of the happy coincidence of the celebration of the birth of Jesus with the significant change of the seasons. Just as the light of the sun begins once more to grow stronger, so too our Advent prayers strengthen as we greet the new light of Christ at his birth and ask for that light to increase in our lives.

This is the Season of Light, the Season of Hope. Whether from the glow of the Advent wreath candles, the lights of the Christmas tree, the flame of the Menorah, or perhaps simply the blue sky on a rare day of sunshine in a Milwaukee December, there is light! All of these can remind us of the presence of God and the promise of hope that is fulfilled in this holy season.

Remember that behind the lights is the radiance that is our God. See the hope in the faces of the people around you. See it in the faces of your family and friends and coworkers. See it in your own face when you look in the mirror. Doing this will allow each of us to welcome that little baby on Christmas, the way that Mary and Joseph so willingly welcomed him into their lives. And know that God so lovingly welcomes us into His.

May the peace of God rule in your dreams. May your joys be fulfilled and your prayers answered. May you have healing, health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.

Have a graced Advent and a Merry Christmas from all of us at Marquette University.

Make time each day to savor the gifts of the Christmas season

By Kathy Coffey-Guenther, Ph.D., Senior Mission and Ignatian Leadership Specialist

Yes, it is that time again ... St Nick's shoes or stockings hung and filled with treats yet? Christmas trees to choose and decorate, lists to make, gifts to purchase, parties to attend or host, and cookies to bake. These next few weeks can be some of the most chaotic of the year. It seems that there is always something to do for someone or someplace to be for someone. Is it any wonder some of us begin to dread the holidays?

And yet, maybe for this year and season, maybe we can commit to try to remember, what it is all for.

Remember Christmas Mass when you were growing up? See yourself as a child walking into Church- remember the smells of Christmas, the trees with sparkling lights perhaps, the Nativity set with the baby Jesus finally lying in the cradle in the manger. Remember the tight Sunday shoes you wore or the pride you may have felt wearing your sparkly Christmas dress. Think back and recall the company who came and the tables of treats and meats as you celebrated. And sure, there were gifts from Santa ... maybe even one or two that were really special, that you can still remember today.

But for most of us, we will remember the people, the relationships, the family members who we loved and others who always fought or drove our parents crazy! For most of us, we will remember the traditions, the baby Jesus, the Manger and the family nativity set, the twinkle lights and the magic of the season.

Remember?

Remember?

The season is still magical today! We still wait for the baby Jesus to bring love and hope and new possibilities to each of us and our world through stillness and waiting and patience and beauty and family and worship and angels with messages of wonder and gracious compassion.

The season is now, and God awaits!

So play your favorite Christmas carols, light your twinkle lights or favorite candles, pray in thanksgiving for all of your blessings, and pray in hope for all who wait for love and possibilities and soft compassion in their lives. And then gather with your favorite people in the world, and enjoy your cookies and hot chocolate, stay out of the stores and spontaneously stop by a church or chapel for a visit.

Make some time and space in each day to savor the gifts of this season- gifts that touch us far beyond paper and bows. Make time and space this season to Love and be Loved, to give and to receive.
Wishing you a blessed Advent and Christmas season!

We Are Marquette: Getting to know Dr. Xavier Cole, Vice President of Student Affairs

"It was overwhelming how much I missed Jesuit education."

Dr. Xavier Cole joined Marquette in 2016 after he felt re-called to the people-center approach of Jesuit education. In this We Are Marquette podcast and interview, Dr. Cole explains Marquette's long-standing mission to serve first-generation students; his personal journey to getting comfortable with discomfort and the urgency of change; creating moral and ethical leaders; and much more.

Marquette Magazine: Discerning internships
Which way to go? Sometimes it's about choosing the right path.

For Wendy Volz Daniels in the Klingler College Department of Social and Cultural Sciences, seeing students have transforming experiences because of internships is the reward in her work. “Their lives are being changed just as much as the lives of the people they are working with,” she says. “These students are doing great work becoming men and women for others.”

Marquette University Alumni Association Mentor Program

From my experience serving in the Marquette mentor program discussions the past five years, certain tools have been singled out as important for those of us in the program and for professional life beyond the program. These tools may seem very obvious at first glance, but oh, how we all struggle with them! From my discussions with mentees, here are some basic concepts to consider.
