Marquette students featured on ABC News for 'ConfIdence' box to encourage college students to care for mental health

Founder Mae Haggerty came up with the idea of self-care boxes for students after her own battle with depression and anxiety. Her three business partners also had their own experiences with mental health, which led them to identify the need for college students to practice more self-care.

Haggerty said she and her co-founders want to use the self-care boxes as a way to make students recognize mental health as something they need to address daily. "We like to talk about it as mental hygiene because it’s like brushing your teeth, you have to do it every day," she said.

FAITH

Blue sky

A prayer to My Father

By Kathleen Coffey-Guenther, Ph.D., Arts '85, Grad '88, '98, Senior Mission and Ignatian Leadership Specialist

Our Father,
My Father,

Who art in Heaven,
Who walks and runs and stumbles upon this earth,

Hallowed be thy name.
I am blessed by your name.

Give us this day our daily bread,
Thank you for this day, my anam cara,

And forgive us our trespasses,
And let us forgive one another for any harm we may have caused,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Let us be generous with extending grace towards one another,

Always resting in the depth of God’s loving care for us and
All other beings in this blessed creation.

And lead us not into temptation,
Let us stay indifferent and unattached to any one thing beyond Christ’s love,

But deliver us from evil.
And let our love always serve Christ’s glory by loving and serving others.

Amen.

President Lovell discusses higher education and faith in WTMJ Conversations podcast

In an hour-long radio interview with WTMJ Conversations, President Michael R. Lovell shared his thoughts on the higher education landscape and how faith has changed his life. When asked about what the ideal classroom model will look like, Lovell mentioned how technology and online courses is the path that higher education is moving towards. “Gen Z students are used to swiping and having apps; it’s a different group and they learn differently. We have to transition the university for their learning styles,” Lovell said.

LEADERSHIP

With a cap and gown and broken heart
Commencement speech by first-generation college student Jacob Zelinski, Class of 2019

"If I’ve learned anything in my experiences with heartbreak, it’s that you can’t have it all, but you can have songs at sunset that remind you of your brother.

"We carry a lot on our hearts. We etch in lessons and love and Christ’s words right on top. When we etch things into our hearts, they become part of us, for it’s in the heart’s breaking that these etchings seep into who we are as human beings — emphasis on the being."

Live uncomfortably!
I wanted nothing more than to leave Milwaukee. Here’s why I stayed — and spread my wings

By Marquette student Donya Robinson

I applied to Marquette because of its alumni, reputation and the college experience it offered. One of the alumni I knew was my uncle. He always told me about how much he loved attending Marquette and the cool programs that he took part in including the Educational Opportunity Program, and the Les Aspin Center for Government, a program where Marquette allowed students to spend a semester in Washington, D.C., and intern for politicians.

Read about how Donya came to believe that she needs to be the change she wants to see happen.
