Marissa Evans
Beyond reporting: Investigative reporter Marissa Evans, Comm '13, documented how poverty, race, health economics and politics leave Texas women in peril -- and followed up on fixing the problem

Educational Opportunity Program 50th Anniversary WordmarkAs the new health reporter for The Texas Tribune, an innovative online news source, Marissa Evans, Comm ’13, Educational Opportunity Program alumna, was front and center for the opening speeches of the state legislative session in 2016.

Eager for responses to a report showing pregnant women and new mothers in Texas dying in alarming numbers, Evans heard top leaders mention practically every issue but maternal health. She vowed to bring the issue out of the shadows, launching a reporting project that took her to all corners of the state, even Poland, to report on promising strategies there. October reflection: Welcome home to Marquette

By Rev. Frederick Zagone, Acting Vice President of Mission and Ministry and Chaplain of the Marquette University Alumni Association

We just celebrated Reunion and Homecoming on campus. As I celebrated events with the Golden Jubilee alumni, I couldn’t stop the Bryan Adams song, Summer of ’69 from running through my head:

Oh, when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I'd always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life.

Homecoming and Reunion are both opportunities to return to a place where perhaps you spent “the best days of your life.” We revisit favorite places that remind us of our past. Today, our students have the exciting opportunity to be creating the memories that will hopefully follow them for a lifetime. Perhaps you met your spouse or maybe your best friends at Marquette. Even if s/he is no longer here, there may have been a teacher or staff person who somehow affected your life. Sometimes, it is just nice to come home to a familiar place.

We again participated in Stuff the Truck (collecting food for the hungry), the Bed Races on 12th Street, the dedication of the new Physician’s Assistant Studies building, and Marquette Madness kicking off another hope-filled basketball season. This year the Concert on the Mall was at Fiserv Forum. Good thing with the rains that came down Saturday night!

Those who attended the events this year saw many changes on campus. The Athletic and Human Performance Research Center was dedicated in the Spring. Every day provides new opportunities and challenges for our students. We move forward ready for transformation knowing that God has great plans for us. We have high expectations for our students, faculty, staff and alumni to be the difference.

The shell of the former McCormick Hall has an eerie appearance these days. Appropriate as we approach Halloween and the remembrance of the deceased in November. All Saints’ Day. All Souls’ Day. All Saints’ of the Society of Jesus.

We pray God continues to bless Marquette. Our learning. Our teaching. Our research. Our living. May God bless you, too. And don't forget to check out the All Souls' Day Remembrance in November:

PLUS: All Souls' Day is Nov. 2 -- Submit the name of a loved one for remembrance.

Career advice: Why fear in the workplace is unnecessary- and 3 ways to overcome it
By Kyle Willkom, Bus Ad ’12

I remember the first time I had to ask for a vacation day. I was in my first job out of college, and had a good reason to ask for the day off. I checked the schedule and nothing urgent seemed to be happening on that date. I was prepared to ask well in advance and ... I was scared to death.

Educational Opportunity Program 50th Anniversary WordmarkWhen asked why she came to Marquette University, Sara Manjee says that Marquette chose her. The current Marquette University Student Government president is one of four sisters who have called Marquette home. With all of her siblings in blue and gold, it is easy to understand why Sara saw it that way.
