Distinguished Alumna in Service to Nursing Award

Judy Goessele RussellJUDITH GOESSELE RUSSELL, NURS '64
Minocqua, Wis.

In everything she has done since graduation — from serving as a labor and delivery nurse to a corporate to a parish nurse — Judy has remembered one thing: “I am a Marquette nurse, and I am proud of it.”

She proudly cared for thousands during her 49-year career. She was a clinical instructor in labor and delivery at Loyola University Chicago and an L/D nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee and St. Catherine’s in Kenosha, Wis.

Judy was a certified occupational health nurse for CF Ind. and Bank One in Chicago. In Arlington Heights, Ill., she was a village community health nurse.

“Nursing is the best choice I made initially and continues to be so throughout my life,” she says. “I enjoy using every aspect of the profession with my family, friends and community.”

And there hasn’t been a time when Judy wasn’t actively supplementing her professional life with volunteer work. Since moving to Minocqua, Wis., Judy has been active with a Hospice House and the food pantry. She is a board member of the Howard Young Foundation and co-chairs the Women’s Legacy Council, which is leading the rural hospital’s fundraising efforts to create a cardiac center. Future plans include working with her parish priest to develop more church health-driven community outreach efforts.

“It is simple,” says Judy, who met her husband, Ted, Arts ’64, on campus. “Using my Jesuit nursing education to aid our community’s health and social service needs certainly feeds my soul.”
