John
C. Barron, JOUR '80
John
Barron calls his job a "thrilling combo of huge impact and
high-wire act." He is editor-in-chief of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Says
John, "Over 1.5 million people will see our product tomorrow
and as of 5 p.m. today we still don't know what it will look
like." Which begs the question: why subject yourself to
that kind of daily stress? Because, in his words, "It's
more fun than Great America — with a lot less waiting."
John
began his journalism career as assistant editor of Crain's
Chicago Business. He then moved to Detroit where he was editor
of Detroit
Monthly, the metro area’s city magazine.
While in
the Motor City he also worked as a video columnist for the
Detroit News and as an entertainment correspondent for WXYT-AM.
He joined
the Sun-Times 11 years ago.
Looking back on his college
years, this communication graduate is most grateful for "the
habit of thought Marquette encouraged. With ethics, social justice,
fairness and compassion in the air, you couldn't help but develop
a ‘reflex to reflect' that serves well in looking beyond
the five W's of a newspaper story," he says.
John
continues to be supportive of his alma mater by assisting
with the university's admissions efforts in Chicago and serving
on
the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication
advisory board.
