 Ann Barry’s original intent was to enter the field of
physical therapy, but Marquette’s program was full, so
she switched to speech pathology — and found her niche.
In addition to her work as a speech pathologist at Wadewitz
School in the Racine, Wis., Unified School District, Ann helped
initiate the district’s assistive technology program 15
years ago, serving as a consultant, working directly with students
and their families, keeping up with new technologies and introducing
special education students to devices that can help them in the
classroom.
Although Ann admits that keeping up with technology can be challenging,
her willingness to do so means that her students have the resources
they need to succeed.
Her personal formula for success, “to always be mindful
of the needs of others and work as part of a team when making
decisions to help them,” has given her the patience and
wisdom to excel in her work.
In addition to her work in the school district, Ann is active
in professional and community organizations, and has been recognized
as a Woman of Distinction in Education by the Racine YWCA.
She stays in touch with Marquette as a periodic guest lecturer
on augmentative/alternative communication and by hosting graduate
students. Her priorities in life are “faith, family and
work—in that order.”
