Gary
Wells, BUS AD '70
Gary Wells is the most successful
ice cream man ever to graduate from Marquette University. That's
not to say that he drives around in a truck that's blaring music
while wearing a white uniform. Instead, this graduate of the
College of Business Administration is the current CEO of Wells'
Dairy Inc., a company that produces Blue Bunny ice cream, as
well as an assortment of other frozen novelties, desserts and
fresh yogurts.
In 1913, Gary's great-grandfather started
the company with $250. Today, with 3,000 employees making a
product sold throughout the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico, Wells'
Dairy is the largest family-owned and managed dairy processor
in the United States.
Under Gary's leadership, the company has
expanded its production while pulling off the seemingly impossible
contradiction of competing with the industry's behemoths and
remaining true its family-style roots. Communication is the
key, according to Gary. "When everyone at Wells knows what they need to know,
no one can stop us."
Gary's expertise is widely sought
and his success is often recognized. He serves on the boards
of numerous industry associations and, last year, he received
both the Chief Executive Network's "Innovation Excellence
Award" and the International Dairy Foods Association's "Soaring
Eagle Award."
