Daniel L. Meyer, Bus Ad ’83

Daniel Meyer

Hard work, focus, a willingness to change and a passion to excel. Successful entrepreneurship requires all four. Daniel Meyer should know. He not only covers the ins and outs of the entrepreneurial world for BizTimes Milwaukee, which is part of BizTimes Media, but as the publication’s founder, publisher and owner, he’s one himself.

Meyer launched his company in 1995 under the name Small Business Times after spending 10 years as sales representative and, later, advertising director for another business publication in Milwaukee. Aside from starting a weekly employment publication in 1998 and selling it in 2001, Meyer’s company is primarily focused on the regional business-to-business market in southeastern Wisconsin.

The company has evolved from a monthly business publication to a fully integrated media company. In 1999, because of growth and demand, Meyer switched to a biweekly frequency. He and his team also rounded out their product offering by adding events. Today, including the annual BizTech Conference & Expo, which was launched in 2004, 10,000 of the region’s top-level executives attend their 14 different events throughout the year.

BizTimes Media has taken full advantage of the growth of the Internet. In 2005, Meyer’s company launched its BizTimes daily e-newsletter. Since then, he now publishes four additional weekly e-newsletters on four different vertical markets. Its BizTimes.com site, which in 2007 won a silver award in a national competition as the best regional business-to-business Web site, continues to growth exponentially.

In late 2008, noticing that the company’s name and products did not reflect its true position in the market, Meyer changed some things. He gave it a new name, BizTimes Media LLC, which includes the redesigned and relaunched news magazine, BizTimes Milwaukee, the growing BizTimes.com products and BizTimes Events.

“As the industry changes, we are poised to change with it,” he says. “Though it’s gratifying to see the impact we have had on the market over the past 14 years, I continue to look forward to the new challenges and opportunities we’ll uncover as our journey continues.”
