thomas h. werner,
Tom’s successful career is based on his professional philosophy: “Work hard, seek advice from smart people and be decisive.” He adds that Marquette further developed his work ethic, sense of independent thinking and priority-setting skills.
These values have contributed to a very successful career. Since June 2003, Tom has been chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors at SunPower. SunPower’s solar cells are highly efficient—20 and 21.5 percent efficient compared to an industry average of about 15 percent. Tom is proud to see his SunPower team “perform at high levels and to be able to see accomplishments in real time.” His work ethic and positive attitude carry over to his free time as well, when he competes in triathlons “for fun.”
Prior to joining SunPower, Tom served as chief executive officer of Silicon Light Machines, Inc., an optical solutions subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. Before that he was vice president and general manager of the Business Connectivity Group of 3Com Corp., a network solutions company.
Tom currently serves as a board member of SunPower, Cree and Silicon Light Machines. He holds bachelor's degrees in industrial engineering (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and electrical engineering (Marquette University) and a master's degree in business administration from George Washington University. He notes that he worked full time while a Marquette student, and appreciated the sincerity and high expectations of his professors.
