Laura Wright Mathews,
Nurs '73 and Grad '79, was the 2004 recipient of the Mary Neville
Bielefeld Award. The award honors an alumna who demonstrates loyalty
to the ideals of Marquette .
Mathews retired in 1992
after having worked for the Wisconsin Department of Health and
Social Services and having served as regional director of public
health.
Prior to working in
the public sector, she was in-service director and director of
nursing at the Steven Bryant Nursing Home in Milwaukee. She co-founded
the Multicultural Advisory Committee to advise Marquette University
's College of Nursing on increasing the number of students and
faculty of color and enhancing the cultural competence of faculty.
She served on the College of Nursing Alumni Association Board
from 1995-97 and completed the Parish Nurse Program at Marquette
in 1996.
Laura has been involved
in many community organizations, including Interfaith, the Milwaukee
County Commission on Aging and the Council of Elders of the Wisconsin
Association of Public Sector Employees. In 1989, she received
the Outstanding Alumna Award from the College of Nursing. The
Marquette Club of Milwaukee honored her in 1994 for her leadership
in community service and advocacy.
She has received multiple
citations and commendations from the mayor of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee
County executive, the Milwaukee County Board and former Wis. Gov.
Tommy G. Thompson. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and the
Milwaukee County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
