Joyana Jacoby received
a $1000 Ignatian Leadership award for her commitment to social
justice and volunteer service. The award is presented by AMUW
to a graduating female student in recognition of her leadership
and her service activities while studying at Marquette University.
Jacoby was a volunteer/site
coordinator for Noon Run, Guest House and Midnight Run - organizations
that focus on hunger and homelessness. In Spring 2003, Jacoby
spent a semester studying in El Salvador where she explored the
lives of Salvadorans including their struggles with poverty, violence
and gender inequities. As part of her experience, she lived with
a rural family for two weeks.
One of her nominators
noted, “In a simple Ignatian phrase, Joyana's contribution is
‘contemplative action'.” She is witness to many as one who is
prayerful, reflective and intensely engaged in the life of the
campus and neighboring (global) community.”
Jacoby participated
in campus ministry activities, Gesu meal program, Benedict Center
Jail Ministry, AIDS Walk Wisconsin, and was an Interfaith visitor
to an elder. Her volunteer activities reflect her call to service
and justice.
Jacoby is a 2004 Arts
and Sciences summa cum laude graduate with a major in theology
and sociology. Currently she is a Good Shepherd volunteer in Leon
, Mexico, committed to two years of international service working
with the poor and focusing on economic injustice and women's empowerment.
Jacoby says, “My Marquette
experience will remain a touchstone for me to dive into the questions,
to root myself in the Jesuit ideals, to trust and to believe in
the Spirit working vividly within me and others.”
