We met one of his clients to discuss a particular field of insurance followed by several meetings with other contacts in the business world. Overall, it was a great and productive day. I'm enjoying the mentor program and eager for what's to come!"

Dr. Brian Brown and Brittany Witty

Mentor Dr. Brian Brown, Arts ’07 (Brittany Witty, arts mentee): “Brittany shadowed me in my office for the day, followed by lunch in Chicago’s Marquette Building. We had a wonderful time!”

Don't delay- expand your network with 2017-18 MUAA Mentor Directory

MUAA Mentor ProgramAs a reminder, join many program participants who are building their Marquette network through the 2017-18 MUAA Mentor Program Mentor Directory, which features more than 100 alumni mentors. Learn how other mentors and mentees work together, the career journey of other mentors, ask about career exploration after Marquette, the job market in a particular city and more.

Program participants are invited to secure a directory by completing the volunteer agreement form which was sent previously and emailing it to daniel.deweerdt@marquette.edu.

Consider these mentor/mentee topics to ensure successful outcomes

MUAA Mentor ProgramFor mentees
- It's the halfway point of this year's mentor program. Refer to your agreed upon goals document. How are you and your mentor progressing toward the goals you initially set? Is it necessary to make an adjustment or two?
- For your next conversation, add an agenda item to discuss how the partnership is progressing. What's gone well? What can be better. Be transparent to ensure a positive experience in the coming months.
- Spring break is March 11-18. Can you shadow your mentor or someone who your mentor knows residing in your area?
- Has your mentor reviewed your resume?
- What are two professional development opportunities your mentor suggest you consider prior to the end of the semester? This could include a mock interview, contacting another program mentor, reviewing a resume or improving your LinkedIn profile.
- Secure the 2017-18 MUAA Mentor Directory to expand your network and learn from other mentors in your potential field of interest/place of residence following graduation.
- Plan to attend the Jan. 28 networking social, best practices workshops in March and the April 26 mentor program finale to learn from other participants and enhance your networking skills.

- Spring break is March 11-18. Can your mentee shadow you if they haven't done so (or do a return visit)?
- What is your mentee doing now in preparation for summer or post-graduation to support their career objectives?
- Many Marquette students are involved in service projects. What suggestions can you offer in terms of how you view volunteering as a professional? What are the positives? Any drawbacks?
- Secure the 2017-18 MUAA Mentor Program Directory to contact a fellow mentor to learn about their best practices and their line of work. Encourage your mentee to do the same.
- If possible, attend the Jan. 28 networking social, best practices workshop teleconference in March and the April 26 mentor program finale to meet other participants and enhance their networking skills.

Five Questions With... Mentor Sarah Guernsey, Arts '94 (Emma Garry, arts mentee)

Mentor Sarah Guernsey and mentee Emma Garry1. What qualities do you look for and appreciate in the people you work with or hire?
I very much respond to candidates who are genuine. I also look for self-confidence and a sense of humor. But, most importantly, I love a listmaker!

2. Book you’re reading or last read?
Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein. It tells the tale of the economic and very personal hits a small Midwestern city took when a major GM plant closed—9,000 jobs were lost. It gives a great lens on how people try to cope with loss and unemployment, and also reflects on what it means to be part of a community.

3. What’s your favorite Marquette memory?
I loved being a GDL at orientation. Do you still have the square dance? Hilarious!

4.  What are two things you think a Marquette student should do before graduation?
1. Hang out at Klode Park
2. Go to a fish fry

5. Unlike many others, you’ve worked at the same organization- the Art Institute of Chicago- since graduating from Marquette in 1994. What do you believe are keys to a successful and productive career?
You have to care about what you do! I also love that my job is dynamic and every day brings new projects, stories, and opportunities.

Sarah Guernsey, Arts '94, is Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Art Institute of Chicago. This is the first year she's served in the MUAA Mentor Program.
