Marquette Mentors Virtual Retreat

More than 100 program participants gather at Virtual Retreat to learn, connect

On Jan. 14, Marquette Mentors hosted its first ever Virtual Retreat. More than 100 mentors, mentees, campus partners and mentee alumni attended the retreat hosted on a platform that allowed everyone to freely network around a “room” similar to professional events pre-COVID-19.

Sessions included panel discussions and small-group tables highlighting topics such as the transition from Marquette to career, the importance of work/life balance and a day in the life of a mentor’s career.

“I learned a great deal from the mentor panelists and my breakout sessions, especially since I don’t exactly know what I want to do career-wise,” says Mia Ketelhohn, engineering mentee (mentor Aleisha Jaeger, Eng ’03). “It was very reassuring to hear how career paths can change and how much success one can have with the right mindset.”

Consider these mentor/mentee topics to help ensure successful outcomes

For mentees
- It's the halfway point of this year's mentor program. Refer to your agreed upon goals document. How are you and your mentor progressing toward the goals you initially set? Is it necessary to make an adjustment or two?
- For your next conversation, add an agenda item to discuss how the partnership is progressing. What's gone well? What can be better? Be transparent to ensure a positive experience in the coming months.
- Has your mentor reviewed your resume?
- What are two professional development opportunities your mentor can suggest for you prior to the end of the semester? This could include a mock interview, contacting another program mentor, reviewing a resume or improving your LinkedIn profile.
- Review the 2020-21 Marquette Mentors Online Directory to expand your network and learn from other mentors in your potential field of interest/place of residence following graduation. The online directory link was emailed to all program participants in November.

For mentors
- How are you and your mentee progressing toward the goals you initially set? Is it necessary to make an adjustment or two?
- For your next conversation, add an agenda item to discuss how the partnership is progressing. What's gone well? What can be better? Be transparent to ensure a positive experience in the coming months.
- What is your mentee doing now in preparation for summer or post-graduation to support their career objectives?
- Many Marquette students are involved in service projects. What suggestions can you offer in terms of how you view volunteering as a professional? What are the positives? Any drawbacks?
- Review the 2020-21 Marquette Mentors Online Directory to contact a fellow mentor in your industry or area of interest and learn how they best support their mentee. Encourage your mentee to do the same. The online directory link was emailed to all program participants in November.
