As we look forward to the start of the new school year, we are embarking on an exciting year ahead in the College of Nursing. The university has launched a nationwide search for a new dean, as Dr. Lea Acord has returned to a faculty role in the college. To lead the college during this search, Provost Madeline Wake has appointed Dr. Ellen B. Rudy as interim dean, effective this month. Provost Wake noted that Marquette is fortunate to attract this national leader as interim dean. "I expect Dr. Rudy to continue development of our strong undergraduate and graduate programs and to advance faculty research," she said. Dr. Rudy is currently a senior consultant for the National Institute of Health and holds a part-time faculty appointment at Ohio State University. She was dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing from 1991 to 2001. During Dr. Rudy's tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, the School of Nursing repeatedly ranked high in NIH levels of research funding. She initiated an award program recognizing excellence in bedside nursing, Cameos of Caring, which is now used in 37 Pittsburgh hospitals and three additional university settings. She has also been the principal investigator on five NIH-funded projects. Dr. Rudy has published widely in professional journals and co-authored several textbooks. She has received numerous honors from professional organizations, including being named a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing. She is a graduate of Ohio State University and has master's degrees in public administration from the University of Dayton and in nursing from the University of Maryland. Dr. Rudy earned her Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University. In another administrative change, Dr. Kerry Kosmoski-Goepfert succeeds Dr. Janet Krejci as associate dean for undergraduate programs. Dr. Kosmoski-Goepfert has served as a professor in the College of Nursing since 1999. Her specialization is nursing services administration, adult acute care nursing adult education and distance education. Dr. Krejci has been selected by the American Council on Education as one of 39 college and university faculty and administrators to participate in the 2007-08 ACE Fellows Program. The fellowship program focuses on identifying and preparing senior leadership for the nation's colleges and universities. It combines seminars, interactive learning opportunities, campus events, and placement at another higher education institution to condense years of on-the-job experience and skills development into a single year. Dr. Krejci will be in Arizona fulfilling her fellowship at Arizona State University and will return to Marquette University in fall 2008 as a full time faculty member. With these new leadership developments, we are reminded that the mission of the College of Nursing remains rooted in the Jesuit tradition of excellence, providing a learning environment that emphasizes spiritual development, leadership formation and social responsibility. At Marquette, the focus is to provide our students with a strong foundation for exceptional career success and success as a whole person. With the partnership of our valued alumni, we encourage students to be the difference in the world by and living their values and using their God given talents to serve others.
