Dear Marquette community:
I am pleased to share with you the announcement of Larry Williams as the Vice President and Director of Athletics. He will assume his role on January 2, reporting directly to me. The full news release on his appointment can be found here.
Currently the Athletic Director at the University of Portland, Larry brings outstanding experience to our university community. His accomplishments at Portland combine fierce competitiveness and athletic success with academic excellence. Under his leadership, Portland achieved a national championship in women’s soccer and the university’s first-ever national ranking for men’s basketball, baseball and tennis - all the while steadily advancing student-athletes’ academic performance and celebrating some remarkable academic accomplishments. Most importantly, Larry’s personal and professional success is rooted in principles and values familiar to the Marquette community: a deep sense of ethics, integrity and leadership expressed in service to others.
The tradition and legacy of Marquette Athletics binds together Marquette students, alumni and friends around the world, with pride and passion for the accomplishments of the university and its student-athletes. The Search Committee was chaired by alumnus Allie McGuire, and included university trustee and alumnus Doc Rivers, current head coach of the Boston Celtics; along with Dean of Nursing Margaret Callahan and Professor of Law and Director of the National Sports Law Institute Matt Mitten. In Larry, I believe they have helped us identify a leader who can honor our storied past while leading us to even greater heights in the future.
Please join me in welcoming Larry Williams, his wife Laura Lee Williams and the entire Williams family to the Marquette community.
Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
President, Marquette University
