How do I...?

Tips for using MU Connect

MU Connect Tip #1: Adding a Personal Pal

Want to add a few friends to your Personal Pals list? This allows you to keep links to your friends' or business associates' profile pages easily accessible right when you log in. And it's easy!

1. Search for a fellow alum in the Alumni Directory

2. Click on the name to visit his/her Personal Profile Page

3. On the right side of your screen under OPTIONS, you'll see:

Add to Pers Pals

4. Click this link. A new window will pop up to let you know that the alum will be notified of your request to add them to your Personal Pals list. You'll be given the option to continue or cancel.

5. You're done!

Check the PERSONAL PALS box on your profile page to find out when your fellow alum has accepted your request.

MU Connect Tip #2: Uploading a Photo

How can you reduce the file size to under 53k and still post a large, clear image to share with fellow alumni? There are many software packages available FREE for resizing your images.

Visit www.dreamscapesoftware.com/products/jpegcompress to download JPEGCompress, a free application that will help you compress your photos for the Web.

1. To begin compressing images for the web you need to first open an image in JPEGCompress. You can open an image within JPEGCompress by clicking on the File menu and choosing Open Image.

2. You will then be asked to select the image you want to open.

3. Once you have selected your image, click the Open button.

4. You should now see the image you have chosen within the JPEG Compress window. Take a look at the image's Original Size. If your image is like most images, it's pretty big.

5. The next step is to choose a quality level that will allow your image become small enough, while still looking good. You can do this by either typing a custom quality level or by dragging the Quality Slider Bar to the left or right.

Resizing

Resizing a photo can provide great reductions in it's download time. To resize a photo, choose Resize Image from the Image menu. You will then be able to resize your photo based on either its pixels or percentage.

Saving Your Photo

When you have completed making changes to your photo, you can save it as a JPEG by clicking the File menu and choosing Save As. By default, "new_" will be placed in front of the image's file name to prevent overwriting the original image.

If you wish to save your photo into a different image format then click the File menu and choose an image format from within the Export As submenu. Please note that exporting your photo into a format other than JPEG will not necessarily mean that the image will retain its compressed file size.

Back on MU Connect...

Post your photo by logging in and visiting your Personal Profile page.

1. Under Utilities, click “My Photos”
2. Click “Upload a New Image”
3. Browse your documents to select a photo
4. Click “Begin Transfer”
5. Type in a description for your photo
6. Click “Update”

The site administrator will view your image and approve it. When this happens, you will receive an e-mail. You may then visit your profile page and either add the image as your main photo or create a photo album.
