Christmas at Marquette

An Advent and Christmas reflection

This time of year, It’s a Wonderful Life often is on television. It is the quintessential Christmas story with a hero and a villain and we all know that the good guy wins in the end. That Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls reminds us all of Christmases past as we look to the coming of the baby Jesus this year, and Christ who is to come in the future.

Avery TompkinsTara Tompkins, Grad '12, and Wayne Tompkins welcomed daughter Avery Skylar on July 31, 2015. She weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long. The family lives in Conroe, Texas.

Marc P. Cohn, D.D.S., Dent '82, was appointed to the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments as a dental consultant. Marc lives in Glendale, Ariz.

 

Chris MermigasChris Mermigas, Arts '09, was named deputy legal counsel for North America for Valid USA, Inc., a world leader in manufacturing credit cards, SIM cards, gift cards, digital marketing and identification solutions. Chris lives in Chicago.

Giving Tuesday donors blow away goal with help of match gifts
Giving Tuesday - How I will leave my MarqIn celebration of Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1, 335 alumni, parents, friends and students contributed $84,945 in support of Marquette students. Plus, we met the challenges from an anonymous trustee emerita and anonymous alumni couple and received $35,000 in matching dollars, bringing our grand total to $119,945 – a 320 percent increase in dollars raised from our Giving Tuesday efforts last year! Burke Foundation gives Marquette $6 million to expand scholarships

The Trinity Fellows program for graduate students and the Burke Scholars program for undergraduates, both of which incorporate volunteer service as a key component, were founded by Richard A. Burke. He's a 1956 graduate of Marquette's College of Business Administration, served on the university's Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2005, and in 2005 was elected trustee emeritus in recognition of his service to Marquette. Olympic hopeful fights for his dream and his community

Luis Feliciano. Photo by Rick Wood of the Milwaukee Journal SentinelMarquette student Luis Feliciano answered his phone with a whisper. He apologized and said he couldn't talk because he was in the library. Next week, he'll try to make the U.S. Olympic boxing team.

Feliciano, 22, has balanced school and training for so long that it's become second nature to him. He hits the books during the day and the heavy bag at night. Since September, he's worked out six days a week, and sometimes twice a day, at the United Community Center, his home away from home. Read the full story.


Marquette and Milwaukee's A.O. Smith collaborate on water study

The one-year project, involving national and local academic experts along with business experts on water technology, will result in a study that will go to the White House and Congress, said Marquette President Michael Lovell.


"We are going to put together a team of experts that will work over the next year to develop [the manufacturing] sector and really make some great recommendations on how we should move forward as a nation," Lovell said. Read the full story.

Supper for 12 Strangers draws alumni and students together
Supper for 12 Strangers
Since 1973, The Association of Marquette University Women has organized Supper for 12 Strangers, bringing together current students and members of the Marquette community to share a meal and conversation. November's Supper events united more than 150 students and 28 hosts in the greater Milwaukee area, including the group pictured above, who was hosted by the Marquette University Ethnic Alumni Association.

Rev. Fred Zagone, S.J., at the Phoenix Mass & BrunchKathy and John have coordinated the annual pre-Thanksgiving Phoenix Mass and Brunch since 2003. The event always draws more than 70 people and has become a tradition for Phoenix-area Marquette alumni and families to attend the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Campus food drive collects nearly 900 pounds of food
Stuff the Truck food drive
Marquette University President Michael R. Lovell hosted the "Stuff the Truck" event to close out a campus food drive, which ran from Thanksgiving through Dec. 7. Nearly 900 pounds of food were collected with cash donations of more than $1,500. The food drive was a collaboration between Marquette, Sodexo, Hunger Task Force and Campus Kitchens.
