Led by university President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., Marquette is moving to the next critical stage of its strategic planning process – developing ideas for university-wide goals to be considered for inclusion in the final strategic plan. Contribute to the strategic planning process by sharing your ideas for university-wide goals via the online goal suggestions form by Friday, Feb. 22.

Brendan Howell JohnstonBrendan Johnston, Arts '98, has been named Regional Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and will now compete against seven other finalists for National Coach of the Year. Johnston is foreign language department chairperson, shepherd program director, and head soccer coach at St. Augustine High School in San Diego.

 

The NelsonsThomas H. Nelson Arts '61, Grad '63 and Marianne (Balasty) Nelson, Arts '63, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 11, 2013. They were married in the Church of the Gesu on May 11, 1963, by Rev. Bernard Cook, S.J., who celebrated their wedding mass in English and Latin. Tom retired in 1999 as vice president of First Chicago Corporation (now J. P. Morgan Chase Corporation) in Elgin, Ill. Marianne retired in 2006 as executive director of Fox Valley Land Foundation in Kane County, Ill. They live in Portland, Ore., where Tom pursues nature photography and Marianne enjoys calligraphy.

Tim Vetscher

Tim Vetscher, Comm '98 accepted a new job as the managing editor at KJRH-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma as of January 1, 2013. He also married Amie (Zanck) Vetscher on Saturday, November 10, 2012 in Sedona, Ariz. Vetscher serves as the Southwest representative of the Marquette University Alumni National Board of Directors.

Marquette University College of Communication receives $8.3 million gift to fund fellowship in public service journalism
A Minneapolis couple has donated $8.3 million to the Marquette University J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, Marquette President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., announced today. Read the university press release or today's post in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Community mourns passing of Walsh, longtime Gesu pastor
Rev. Patrick E. Walsh, S.J., longtime associate pastor at the Church of the Gesu, passed away on Feb. 6, 2013. He served the Gesu community for nearly 40 years and was highly regarded by many, including Marquette students who attended his Sunday 6 p.m. Mass.

Packers' Super Bowl champion and medical experts discussed concussions and their impact on athletes when Marquette's College of Health Sciences hosted a forum on Jan. 28. The panel included George Koonce, Grad '12, former Green Bay Packers' linebacker and Super Bowl champion, Bill Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences and several medical experts. Koonce also serves as a director of development in University Advancement at Marquette.

Stories aired on WITI-TV and WDJT-TV (Milwaukee), and WLUK-TV (Green Bay) on Jan. 28 and 29.

Embrace the Streets ServiceThe Marquette Club of San Diego teamed up with Embrace the Streets for a service project in November, collecting and distributing clothes, blankets and more for the local homeless community.

 


Mission Week 2013 is a reminder The World is Our Home
Mission WeekEach year, Marquette University devotes a week to the exploration of its Catholic and Jesuit mission. At Mission Week 2013: The World is Our Home, the university honored the 10 recipients of the Opus Prize in faith-based social entrepreneurship. They have saved and inspired millions and their stories, leadership and service captured the hearts of students, faculty and members of the Marquette community who attended the week-long series of programs, some of which are highlighted in this Mission Week video.
