40 ways to reignite your faith this Lenten season
Across campus, you’ll see Marquette University’s Catholic identity flourishing. And, as we enter the sacred time of Lent — when we are called to simple living, almsgiving, prayer and fasting to grow closer to God — we are challenging our community to go even deeper in our spiritual journey. Who was your favorite Jesuit priest to break bread with? Where was your favorite spot on campus to slow life down and reflect? Did you ever touch the stone that St. Joan of Arc kissed to see if it is colder than the rest? Take a moment to recall how your faith grew in your time at Marquette and you may find inspiration to reignite your faith throughout this Lenten and Easter season.
Marquette researcher receives $800,000 grant to fund neuroscience study
Dr. Marieke Gilmartin, assistant professor of biomedical sciences in Marquette University’s College of Health Sciences, will use the grant to fund research on the mechanisms of memory creation and retention.
"Despite considerable progress toward understanding how memories are formed, many questions remain,” Gilmartin said. “For example, how does the brain learn about events separated in time? These are the questions we seek to answer." Read the full story.
Crime down nearly 30% on campus since Marquette police department instated in 2015
"Now we have the ability to investigate the incident, do the traffic enforcement, make the arrest process, everything from beginning to end. We were relying on the Milwaukee Police Department for that in the past and it just wasn't an efficient way to do things," explained Marquette Police Chief Paul Mascari.
The police chief says his officers' ability to be proactive makes all the difference. Read the full story and watch video from TMJ4.com.
Art City Asks with Susan Longhenry of the Haggerty Museum of Art

Longhenry became the first woman director and chief curator at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University, starting last fall. Read the full story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
A professor's loss becomes his lesson plan
From Marquette University Arts & Sciences Magazine
Optimism does not come easily in a class called "War and Memory," especially when both topics are harsh reminders of life outside the classroom.
The students read five war novels throughout the semester and consider various dynamics of war—its effect on soldiers and civilians, the importance of sharing their stories, the responsibility we have to those affected by war.
Responsibility toward veterans strikes a deep chord for professor Tom Durkin. Telling war stories, especially those of war's innocent victims, was the main focus of his friend James Foley’s work overseas. Read the full story.

February reflection: Do something life-changing for Lent
Last week was Mission Week at Marquette and in this Year of Mercy, as proclaimed by Pope Francis, we ask the question: What amazes us as we recognize and realize the presence of God in the world around us? Can we, do we, see God in in the world around us? Can we celebrate the goodness that God has given us? Can we rejoice in God’s mercy?
This week we begin Lent, the perfect time to form new life-giving habits and abandon old self-destructive habits. But most of us just give up chocolate. Then, when Easter arrives, we realize we really haven’t grown spiritually since the beginning of Lent. Giving up chocolate may help you lose a few pounds but what does it do for anyone else?
What if this year you did more than just give up something during Lent? Do something life-changing. And how appropriate that this year, we have the opportunity to make these changes, to make these choices, in this Year of Mercy.
Let us show mercy to those around us. In our homes, our work place, our neighborhoods. Look in your own heart that we might see God's mercy for us, and share God's mercy with others.
