June reflection: 50 years of St. Joan of Arc Chapel at Marquette
June reflectionEveryone has a St. Joan of Arc Chapel story. Perhaps you were on campus as the chapel was rebuilt, brick by brick, or here for the dedication in 1966. Maybe you met your spouse at one of Father John Naus' Tuesday night masses. There are couples who proposed to one another in or near the chapel and thousands of couples have posed for wedding photos at the site (sorry, weddings are still not allowed in the chapel).

Earlier this month, Vincent Strand, S.J., Arts '05, was ordained a Jesuit priest in the Church of the Gesu. In a television interview the prior day he said, "If I had to put a geographic place where I feel like my vocation to be a priest and a Jesuit was born, it was really in this space [the St. Joan of Arc Chapel]. I was here as a pre-med student at Marquette, planning to go on, get married, to have a family, be a physician." But he felt a stronger pull toward a different life.

For 50 years the St. Joan of Arc Chapel has been a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city and campus life. It has provided peace, tranquility, and most important a place of prayer. A graduate student once said, "In times of trouble, distress or just needing to sort things out, I go visit my friend Joan."

This year we celebrate the gem that has become a symbol of our campus. People travel from all over the world to visit this reminder of our faith. Masses continue to be celebrated daily during the academic year.

From a little French village, to Long Island, New York, to the heart of the Marquette University campus, we recognize this icon which truly reflects the Jesuit and Catholic nature of Marquette.

We pray that future Marquette students for generations to come will know this chapel as a special place where they too might be pulled towards a different life.

Chaplain, Marquette University Alumni Association
