Marquette researchers receive $1.85 million grant for neuroscience study

A group of neuroscientists in the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University has been awarded a $1.85 million National Institutes of Health grant to examine a novel neurotransmitter clearance mechanism that may hold a key to understanding the link between stress and drug addiction.

"This could be a textbook-changing discovery," said Dr. Paul Gasser. "We're looking at a novel mechanism related to stress and addiction, but indications are that this may explain how stressful life events contribute to a number of neuropsychiatric disorders." Read more.

Marquette debuts reusable takeout containers in dining halls
Reusable containersIt's the latest "green" thing at Marquette University, and every freshman and sophomore in a residence hall has one. It's called an OZZI (pronounced Oh-zee), a 9-by-9 inch bluish-green plastic container that's microwaveable and BPA-free.

If all goes as planned, the OZZI will replace tens of thousands of disposable takeout containers that for years have filled garbage cans in campus dining areas, and eventually ended up in landfills. Read more at jsonline.com.

October reflection: A new era begins at Marquette
Wisconsin AvenueAutumn on the Marquette campus is often perceived as the time of most dramatic change. True to their names, the flaming red maple trees along Wisconsin Avenue indicate a change of season.

Another change occurred last month as Marquette inaugurated our first lay president, Dr. Michael R. Lovell. The pomp and circumstance of the Mass and ceremony were great celebrations and Dr. Lovell shared his vision and excitement for several new initiatives and projects. Marquette has had a change of leadership, but true to our tradition we move forward knowing that God has great plans for us.

Cool temperatures and a dreary Saturday couldn’t dampen the spirits on campus during our annual Family Weekend. Hundreds enjoyed the play "Our Town" performed in the Helfaer Theatre as part of their 40th anniversary celebration. The standing ovation was rightly deserved!

We pray God continues to bless Marquette. Our learning. Our teaching. Our research. Our living. May God bless you, too.
