September reflection: All are welcome at Marquette
Marquette SealAs the calendar turned to September we saw some of the warmest days of the summer in Milwaukee. It seemed too early for classes to start but the song running through my head from over 40 years ago is Rod Stewart's "Maggie May:" "It’s late September and I really should be back at school."

Parents have dropped off their children. Nearly a quarter of the freshmen are legacy students with a parent, grandparent or sibling who attended Marquette. More than 20 percent of our freshmen are the first in their family to attend college. Classes have begun and the Mass of the Holy Spirit is behind us. In addition to the students, we welcome several new leaders to our administration, and we look forward to another great year at Marquette.

It is a new beginning for each of us as we will be changed because of the presence of new faces. We thank God for the new beginning for all students. May our staff and faculty teach many things. May we learn to care for one another.

We ask God to continue sending blessings on Marquette that future generations will have the opportunities we have had; the education we’ve received; the recognition of God’s presence that we share.

We ask God to bless us in our new beginning because We Are Marquette! Amen.
