September reflection: Welcome home to Marquette
Wisconsin AvenueIn this third week of the academic year we continue to welcome over 2,000 freshmen who are now calling Marquette home. Parents have dropped off their children. The Mass of the Holy Spirit is behind us. The flaming red maple trees along Wisconsin Avenue are already beginning to turn. In addition to the students, we welcome several new leaders and deans to our administration. And a new "old" tradition is coming back to Marquette: Homecoming!

Marquette may be home for students for just four years. For many faculty and staff Marquette has been home for many years. And for our alumni, Marquette is home forever. There is something special about coming home, whether it be the home where you live, the house where you were raised, or the residence hall where you lived.

Each time you attend a service in the church, synagogue or other place of worship for your tradition, you are, in a sense, "coming home." As Christians, we believe the real homecoming is our entrance to eternal life when this life ends.

Recently we celebrated the canonization of Mother Teresa as she was declared a saint. The ultimate homecoming. Just over 30 years ago this sainted woman walked on the Marquette campus. We are reminded of her love for the poor and the message of hope she shared with us.

We ask God to continue sending hope to us and blessings on Marquette that future generations will have the opportunities we have had; the education we’ve received; the recognition of God’s presence that we share. Always providing us with a place to call home. Amen.

Frederick Zagone, S.J.
Chaplain, Marquette University Alumni Association
