General Information:

As part of the 2011 APS Shock Conference, we are pleased to include a tour of the Advanced Photon Source (APS, not to be confused with the American Physical Society – also APS) at Argonne National Laboratory during the conference’s afternoon off on Tuesday, June 28. APS is a world-class facility for the use of X-rays in characterizing the behavior of materials at high pressures. Such research is critical for the field of shock physics in the understanding of dynamic material behavior.

The tour is open to everyone high school age or higher, prior approval for young people is necessary on an individual basis. Please contact organizers for more details.

 

Registration:

Only 110 attendees will be able to take part in the tour due to the logistics of the tours at the facility. Once all the slots are filled, no additional registrations will be accepted.

Conference attendees who are not U.S. citizens must pre-register by filling out and returning the following form (Click here) by June 1, along with scans of the required documents. Instructions for returning the form are included on the bottom of the form. In addition, it will be necessary to bring original copies of your documents with you on the tour. US citizens are not required to fill out the above mentioned form, but will require a photo ID, such as a driver's license.

All attendees must pay their bus fee before June 14 in order to attend the tour. Please select either US-Citizen or Non-US-Citizen appropriately when paying the registration fee.

 

The bus trip cost to and from APS is $15 per person, please pay in advance of June 14. Those that wish may also purchase a box lunch for $30 that will be available when you board the bus. Four choices are available:

Turkey Sandwich- Kaiser w/ cheddar & Mayo
Ham- Kaiser- w/ swiss & dijon mustar
Roast Beef- Onion Roll w/ provelone and mayo
Veggie Wrap- Tortilla pesto mayo

Each of the lunches will include chips, fruit, cookies and a beverage. If you choose not to purchase the lunch, we advise you to pack or purchase lunch elsewhere as there will likely not be an opportunity to buy food on the tour.

 

Attire:

Please wear long pants and flat, closed-toe shoes.

 

Logistics:

Buses will arrive at the conference hotel and begin loading at 12:45 pm after the end of the morning sessions. They will depart at 1:15 pm for APS. Following the tour, the buses will bring everyone back to the conference hotel. It is expected that the buses will arrive back at the hotel between 5 and 6 pm.
