Dr. Virginia Chappell
Department of English
Dr. Chappell's academic specialty is teaching rhetoric and composition, and she directs the First-Year English Program (English 1001 and 1002). This will be her eighth year as a seminar leader. She always asks her students to make a list of the "Top Ten" reasons to take ARSC 1953, and every year the list includes "meeting great people." Other frequently cited reasons are "Learn how to listen aggressively," "Learn how to back up my opinions with facts from the story," and "Have a class where I can be myself & relax." One of her biggest satisfactions is helping students find a comfortable niche here at MU. She lives a few blocks from Lake Michigan with a big poodle named Abby, who helps her with gardening and Frisbee-tossing.
