In Remembrance: Walter J. Burghardt,  S.J.

Alpha Sigma Nu respectfully remembers the life and work of Father Walter Burghardt.  The 77 years Father Burghardt spent as a Jesuit cannot be summarized while giving due justice to his work. Known for his skilled preaching and desire to spread the "fire in the belly" to others, Fr. Burghardt spent 29 years as a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.   

Burial for Fr. Burghardt will be held Thursday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Woodstock Jesuit Cemetery in Woodstock, Md. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be sent to Preaching the Just Word, Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057–1137.


Northeast PA Alumni Club Hosts Third Annual Afternoon of Reflection

Members of the Alpha Sigma Nu Alumni Club of Northeastern Pennsylvania gathered on Saturday, February 16, 2008, for the third annual Afternoon of Reflection.  Led by Fr. George Aschenbrenner, S.J., members spent time reflecting on aspects of the Lenten season. The afternoon concluded with the weekend liturgy in St. Ignatius Chapel on the University of Scranton campus.  Graduates from the University of Scranton, St. Joseph’s University, and Loyola College in Maryland participated.

Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award Winners for 2007 Announced

The 2007 Book Awards, sponsored by Alpha Sigma Nu and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, were announced October 1.  The category for this year's book awards was "Professional Studies." Sixty entries from 16 Jesuit institutions were submitted for this year's contest.

The following are the 2007 winners in the category of “Professional Studies.”

A Century of Media, A Century of War (Peter Lang, 2006) by Robin Andersen, professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University.

Talking Race in the Classroom (Teachers College Press, 2005) by Jane Bolgatz, an assistant professor of social studies education in the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University.

The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century (Stanford Business Books, 2007) by Albert N. Greco, and Robert M. Wharton, professors in the School of Business at Fordham University and Clara E. Rodríguez, a professor of sociology at Fordham University. 

Sensory Design (University of Minnesota Press, 2004) by Frank Vodvarka, a professor of fine arts at Loyola University Chicago and Joy Monice Malnar, an associate professor of architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Alpha Sigma Nu Book Awards are open to all faculty and administrators, including emeritus faculty and administrators, who have published a book in the three years immediately prior to the year of the discipline. The books are judged by volunteer faculty members on the basis of scholarship, significance of topic to scholars across several disciplines, authority in interpretation, objectivity, presentation, and style. All entries are due by March 1 of the category year and awards are announced October 1.

The 2008 Competition will be in the category of "The Humanities" in which there will be four awards of $1,000 each.  Information on application to the 2008 Book Awards coming soon.
