The Les Aspin Distinguished Public Service Award recognizes an individual from Wisconsin who, like the late Les Aspin, has epitomized public service in the state and whose efforts have influenced national policy. This person serves as a role model for our nation's future leaders, ones committed to the continued advancement of democratic ideals

Congressman Paul Ryan

2014 Les Aspin Center for Government Public Service Award Recipient

Born and raised in Janesville, Congressman Paul Ryan is a fifth-generation Wisconsinite. In his eighth term in Congress, he chairs the House Budget Committee and is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. As the member from the 1st Congressional District, he represents the same district as former Congressman Les Aspin (1971-93).

During his tenure in the House of Representatives, Congressman Ryan has been an ardent supporter of the Les Aspin Center for Government, serving on its Board of Visitors since 2007. During his congressional career, he has placed more than 30 Aspin interns and has hired several students to work on his staff after graduation.

Congressman Ryan earned a degree in economics and political science from Miami University in Ohio. He and his wife, Janna, live in Janesville with their children, Liza, Charlie and Sam.
