BEA2009 Faculty Scriptwriting Competition Winners
Dennis Conway, Vice Chair and 2009 Faculty Scriptwriting Competition Chair, dennis.conway@marist.edu

The winners of the 2009 BEA Writing Division Faculty Scriptwriting Competition have been announced. The top honor, or “Best of Festival” award, went to Eric Edson, of California State Northridge, whose feature, Spirit Walker, also took the “Best of Category” award for Feature Film Scripts. Edson’s adventure follows a young student investigating an apparent land grab of traditional Native American territory, and involves murder, corruption, and secrecy in a small Western town. In the Feature Film category, Awards of Excellence also went to Kevin Corbett of Central Michigan University for Dark Red, and to Emily Edwards of the University of North Carolina Greensboro for The Boathouse. Corbett’s romantic thriller centers on a shy accountant who becomes entangled in a mysterious and deadly internet romance. Edwards’ ghost story involves an unwanted young female orphan placed in an old age home, who is haunted by a water spirit. In the Short Story Category, Kevin Corbett also took “Best of Category” honors with his piece, Crazy, which starts with a familiar premise: a man walks into a bar to reminisce about meeting his wife there years ago, before proceeding to a surprising and shocking ending. Awards of Excellence also went to Frederick C. Jones of Southeast Missouri State for The Ornery Alpaca, and to Kenneth Calhoun of Elon University for Dizzy. Jones’ story deals with a grieving widower who must deal with his dead spouse’s pet animal, which he’s always despised. Calhoun’s piece follows a young musician who moonlights as a musical instrument “repo man” for a music store, and how the job leads him to help a young prodigy. The contest was chaired by Dennis Conway of Marist College. The Writing Division wishes to thank all entrants and judges, and hopes they will continue with the competition in some capacity next year.

BEA2009 Student Scriptwriting Competition Winners
Fred Jones, fjones@semo.edu; and Micheal McAlexander, mcmcalexander@frostburg.edu; 2009 Student Scriptwriting Competition Co-Chairs

The BEA Writing Division announced the winners of the 2009 Student Scriptwriting Competition. The top honor, or “Best of Festival” award and 1st place in the TV Spec category, went to Mike Heyer of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for his script 30 Rock - Liz Wins Another Emmy.  1st Place in the Feature Script category was awarded to Kellie Rice of San Jose State University for her script Andromache.  1st Place in the Short Script category went to Shane Cottle of Missouri State University for his script Fishing for More Than Fish. Also in the TV Spec category, there was a tie for 2nd Place between Carol Harris of Missouri State University for her script Monk - Mr. Monk and the Tattoo Parlor and Chase Davis and Travis Everett of Texas Tech University for their script The Office - Fantasy Football. Honorable Mention was awarded to Jessica Dekruiff, LaToyia Alford, Michael Daniels, Donald Gadberry and Daniel Trzeciak of Purdue University-Calumet for their script Dexter - Hang Me Out to Dry and Jason Brasier of Missouri State University for his script Supernatural – Helldorado. In the Feature Film category, 2nd Place was awarded to Jeremy Inman of San Jose State University for his script Super Hero Party Clown and 3rd Place went to Chrstine Rhee of San Jose State University for her script A Far Away Country. In the Short Script category, Brendan Schmidt of Missouri State University won 2nd Place for his script Day Dreamer and 3rd Place went to Rob Dianora of Southeast Missouri State University for his script Prelude to Eternity. The Student Screenwriting Competition had 57 entrants this year, an increase from previous years. In addition, the co-chairs, in an effort to increase the environmental friendliness of the competition, developed and implemented a partial digital submission process. Students were allowed to submit a PDF-only version of their scripts via email. Not only did this eliminate a great quantity of paper and postage, it made the judging process easier since scripts could be distributed electronically to judges around the country. The contest was co-chaired by Micheal McAlexander of Frostburg State University and Fred Jones of Southeast Missouri State University. The Writing Division wishes to thank all entrants and judges, and hopes they will continue with the competition in some capacity next year.

BEA2009 Scholarly Paper Winners
Jon Stahl, 2009 Paper Chair, jon.stahl@csun.edu

The BEA Writing Division is excited to announce that two papers have been selected as the joint winners of the 2009 BEA Writing Division Scholarly Paper Competition. Sharing first place in this juried competition are: “Writing Hollywood: Rooms with a Point of View,” by Patricia F. Phalen, Associate Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, and “’It Comes from Some Magic Place’: Implications of the Creative Necessity Argument from Lyle v. Warner Bros. Television Productions,” by Mary Blue, Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Tulane University. Each paper deals with different aspects of the television “writers’ room.” The two winners will receive their awards and will present their papers at the BEA Convention panel on Saturday, April 25, at 10:30 a.m., in room N242 of the Convention Center in Las Vegas. Competition Chair Jon Stahl, Associate Professor of Cinema and Television Arts at California State University, Northridge, will moderate the panel. Congratulations to these two scholars on their exemplary papers!
