• The department celebrated the new school year with a picnic, hosted the 2013 Summer Research Program, and volunteered in land stewardship –all in the effort to strengthen our community ties, both in the department, and in the world outside Marquette
• Dr. Stephen Munroe and Dr. Gail Waring to retire at the end of the semester
• A practical and administratively flexible new building allows the department to grow into the 1960’s
• “Big Wally”, Dr. Walter Fredricks was an inspirational teacher, and a level headed leader of the department
• Dr. Dale Noel chronicles experiences before joining our department and students' discoveries at Marquette about root-nodule bacteria
• A guest speaker inspires new approaches to teaching biology, Dr. Michelle Mynlieff receives promotion to full professor, and recent faculty grants and publications
• Catch up with the undergraduate students as they kick off the year by pie-ing professors, conduct experiments in Experimental Physiology, and reach out to the community with Plant Biology
• Students travel to summer courses in Finland and Woods Hole on O’Hara Scholarships, and 3 graduate with their Ph.D.s
• Dr. Jim Bruckner (Ph.D. 2004) has used his microbial biology expertise for projects ranging from microbial communities in water supplies on the International Space Station to extremophiles in hydrothermal vents, and is now in charge of quality control for Rogue Ales
• Dr. Judd Hultquist's (B.S. 2008) groundbreaking graduate work on the relationship between the HIV virus and the human immune system could lead to new therapeutics to treat HIV.
