SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM

What are they up to now?

Our SRP students are high achievers, and the opportunity to conduct independent research as an undergraduate can launch these students to great success.

Marian Lund (SRP 2013) attended the SRP from Gustavus Adolphus College and presented a poster on “HyGRP stress response genes, qLTG3-1 and Glyma17g14850, improve seedling germinability under low temperature and salt stress conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana” at the Conference of Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student Scholarship (Arlington, VA, October 2013)

Taylor Stevens (SRP 2013) presented a poster at the 33rd Midwest Enzyme Chemistry Conference entitled: Investigating allosteric activation in pyruvate carboxylase using chimeric enzymes

Melissa Budelier (SRP 2012) is now in the PhD Biochemistry program within the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She presented a poster at the 26th Symposium of the Protein Society in San Diego (August, 2012) entitled: Investigating the Intramolecular Interaction of the Biotin Carboxyl Carrier Domain with the Carboxyl Transferase Domain in Pyruvate Carboxylase.

Joseph Burclaff (SRP 2012)  attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at Washington University, St. Louis

Michelle Evans (SRP 2012) is currently an undergraduate at Brown University. Michelle presented a poster at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 11-13, 2013, at University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, "The Locomotor Network in the Lamprey Hindbrain: Spinal Input, Oscillatory Mechanisms, and Neuromodulation". She also authored abstract and poster for Dr. Buchanan's lab for the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, San Diego, CA, Nov. 9-13, 2013, “Locomotor Rhythmogenesis in the Caudal Hindbrain of the Lamprey”.

Scott Hetzel (SRP 2012) attended the SRP from Ripon College. Scott presented a poster at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 11-13, 2013, at University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, "Functional importance of disulfide bond formation in Cox12 and the possible role of Rcf1/ Rcf2 proteins".

Meghan Hermanson (SRP 2011) attended the SRP from Bradley University and is a coauthor on the following manuscript:  Zhang Y, Hermanson ME, Eddinger TJ (2013) Tonic and Phasic Smooth Muscle Contraction Is Not Regulated by the PKCa - CPI-17 Pathway in Swine Stomach Antrum and Fundus. PLoS ONE 8(9): e74608.

Alexis Onderak (SRP 2011)  attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student in Biological Sciences at Marquette University

Melissa McLoed (SRP 2011) attended the Undergraduate Summer Research Program from Lawrence University and is currently a PhD student at Boston University. Melissa presented an abstract and poster from Dr. Buchanan's lab for Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, San Diego, CA, Nov. 9-13, 2013, “Locomotor Rhythmogenesis in the Caudal Hindbrain of the Lamprey”.

Anna Quint Miller (SRP 2011) attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  Anna is a co-author on the publication: Ruka, K.A., Miller, A.P., and Blumenthal, E.M. 2013. Inhibition of diuretic stimulation of an insect secretory epithelium by a cGMP-dependent protein kinase.  Am J Physiol Renal Physiol., 304(9), F1210-6.

Emily Sharpe (SRP 2011) attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at the University of Colorado.

Kelly J. Culhane (SRP 2010) attended the SRP from St. Olaf College and is now a PhD student at Yale University.

Doris Kim (SRP 2010) attended the Undergraduate Summer Research Program from Lawrence University, and is currently a MD student at University of Toledo.

Kendall Knight (SRP 2010) attended the SRP from Louisiana State University and presented posters on “Effect of drop-dead mutations on fertility and embryogenesis” at the Experimental Biology conference (Washington, DC., April, 2011)  and on "Fertility and Embryogenesis in Drosophila Affected by the Drop-Dead Gene" at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (Charlotte, NC, November 2010).

Elise Pellmann (SRP 2010) is now in the PhD program at Scripps Research Institute in San Diego. She is co-author on a paper published in Biochemistry in 2012, entitled: Structure of mandelate racemase with bound intermediate analogues benzohydroxamate and cupferron. Elise also presented a poster at the 26th Symposium of the Protein Society in San Diego (August, 2012) entitled: Development and validation of a high-throughput screen for pyruvate carboxylase

Tayler Sheahan (SRP 2010) attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at Washington University, St. Louis.  Tayler presented a poster on “Female sterility and compromised eggshell integrity of drop-dead mutants” at the Drosophila Research Conference  (San Diego, CA, April 2011).

Jennifer Rorex (SRP 2009) attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at the University of Arizona.

Kristen Ruka (SRP 2009) attended the SRP from Marquette University and is now a PhD student at the University of Michigan.  Kristen presented a poster on “Inhibition of tyramine signaling by cGMP in Drosophila Malpighian tubules” at the Experimental Biology conference (Anaheim, CA,  April, 2010). Kristen won the Robert Gunn award for outstanding undergraduate presentation from the Cell and Molecular Physiology Section of the American Physiological Society for this presentation. Kristen is lead author on a publication: Ruka, K.A., Miller, A.P., and Blumenthal, E.M. 2013.
