NSF-CMB: Undergraduate Research in Cellular and Molecular Biology:
This program is restricted to students who plan to attend graduate school and pursue research careers. Preference will be given to students who are members of minorities underrepresented in the sciences and to students from colleges or universities with limited research opportunities in the Biological Sciences. Qualified MU students may apply.
This program is open to students from all universities and colleges.
The Department of Biological Sciences is pleased to announce an extension of our NSF sponsored summer research program in Cell and Molecular Biology starting June 4 and ending August 8, 2012. This program is restricted to students who are interested in attending graduate school and pursuing research careers. Students who are members of minorities currently underrepresented in the sciences and students from colleges or universities with limited research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
The Department of Biological Sciences has a productive faculty actively engaged in both research and teaching. The low student to faculty ratio and the value Marquette places on teaching allows REU students to develop close and supportive relationships with their faculty mentors.
Students in the program will choose from projects focused on cellular and molecular questions in a variety of experimental organisms including bacteria, yeast, worms, flies, rats, mice, and Chlamydomonas. Students will work under the direct supervision of a faculty research mentor. Through “hands-on” experience students will develop a realistic view of scientific research, its pace, its demands, and the thrill of discovery. Faculty mentors for the 2012 program can be found under Summer Research Mentors. Projects and abstracts of recent summer program participants can be viewed under Student Research.
Essential written and verbal communication skills will be developed through weekly journal clubs, laboratory group meetings, and brown bag lunches. Workshops on research ethics, graduate school admission, and career options will be offered. At the end of the summer, students will present the results of their research at both a department-wide poster session and symposium. A variety of social activities will be interwoven throughout the summer including frequent ice cream socials.
Students participating in this program will be housed in furnished Campus Town apartments with full kitchen facilities. Each student will receive a $4300 stipend for the 10-week program. Students are expected to work at least 40 hours per week on their research projects, hence students will not be allowed to enroll in classes or hold outside employment during the program.
REU students will be encouraged to present their work at a national meeting during the following academic year. Travel funds from the NSF are available for this purpose.
Applications must be received by Wednesday, February 1, 2012 for full consideration for the summer of 2012.
Go to Application for information on application procedures and forms. For further information contact Ms. Deborah Weaver via e-mail or by mail, Department of Biological Sciences, Wehr Life Sciences Building, Marquette University, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI 53201.
The Department of Biological Sciences is pleased to announce its 2012 Summer Research Program. (June 4 through August 8) This program is open to students from all universities and colleges (see qualifications).
Participants conduct independent research projects in faculty laboratories in the areas of microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology or invertebrate/vertebrate physiology. See Summer Research Mentors for detailed descriptions of faculty interest. See Student Research for examples of projects from previous summers.
The program pairs each student with a faculty mentor who will supervise the student projects. Students are involved daily in their selected research. At the end of the summer students present the results of their research at both a department-wide poster session and symposium. In addition, students attend weekly journal clubs, a workshop on ethical issues in research, as well as sessions on post-graduate education. The program provides informal social and recreational events.
