Tuition refunds are automatically generated when a student's account comes to a credit balance. An account may come to a credit balance for a variety of reasons: financial aid exceeds tuition and other charges; combination of financial aid and personal payments exceeds charges; tuition adjustment for dropping a class; etc.

Tuition refunds are generated on Mondays and Thursdays.  Weeks with a university holiday may require a different schedule. Students are notified that a refund will be available via their Marquette email account the day a check is available.

Students can have their tuition refunds directly deposited into their checking account, pick up a paper refund check at our office, or have it mailed to them by responding to their email notification with the address they would like for the check to be mailed.  For further assistance, please contact the Office of the Bursar at 414-288-7157.

Direct Deposit Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQ's)

How do I sign up for direct deposit of my refund check?

A Direct Deposit Authorization Agreement Form is on our website, www.marquette.edu/bursar under downloadable forms.  Please print the form, fill in the required information, sign, date and attach a voided check and mail to:  Marquette University, Office of the Bursar, ATTN:  Direct Deposit, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee WI 53201-1881. You may also hand deliver it to our office, 1618 W Wells Street.

How long does it take before direct deposit will be in effect?

It may take up to five (5) business days to update your records from the time you submit the paper authorization.

How long will this authorization remain in place?

This authorization agreement will remain in effect until (a) Marquette University receives a signed, dated notification from the student terminating Direct Deposit; (b) Failure to enroll in or register for any classes at Marquette University for one (1) calendar year; (c) Your bank/credit union no longer honors or accepts direct deposits (d) your account closes.

What happens if I change banks or want to use a different checking account?

To use a different bank or checking account, a new Direct Deposit Authorization Agreement Form needs to be completed and turned in with a voided check to the Office of the Bursar.  It may take up to five (5) business days to update your records from the time you submit the Authorization Agreement Form.

How will I know when my refund monies are deposited in to my checking account?

You will receive an email notification from the Office of the Bursar sent directly to your Marquette email account.

When will my funds be available?

Funds should post to your checking account within 1-2 business days after you receive an email notification from the Office of the Bursar. However, it is your responsibility to verify that the refund has been credited to your bank account before writing checks against these funds. MU is not responsible for bank charges you may incur by writing checks on an unconfirmed deposit.

I have received the direct deposit for the current term, but I have additional charges this term.  Will money be removed from my account?

Marquette will not withdraw money from your checking account.  However, you will receive a bill for the new charges and it is your responsibility to pay them.

My financial aid award has changed, and I now have charges on my account.

If OFSA determines your financial need or eligibility has changed after receiving your refund check, you will be required to repay Marquette the difference.  Failure to repay specified funds will result in a hold placed on academic records, transcripts; diploma and you will not be able to register for subsequent terms.

What happens if my refund is returned by my bank?

If money has been directly deposited into a closed bank account, we must wait for the receiving bank to return the funds.  Once the funds are returned to Marquette, you will receive an email notifying you that a (paper) refund check has been issued.

Can I have my refund directly deposited to my savings account?

We require that the direct deposit of refunds be deposited into a checking account.
