Dr. Charles Wilkie and Marquette University receives $1.1 million defense conctract
The Department of Defense has awarded a $1.1 million contract to Marquette University.
Dr. Charles Wilkie, professor of chemistry, in partnership with a defense contractor, will direct research to develop fire and blast resistant materials for military force protection. Wilkie is developing a coating that would be both blast and fire resistant for application to walls, windows and ceilings to protect buildings and ships against ballistic impact.
Wilkie is the foremost academic researcher on fire retardant technology. His research is widely reported in Flame Retardant News, Modern Plastics and other journals and he has spoken at numerous polymer and fire research conferences in the United States and Europe.
Sen. Herb Kohl and the Wisconsin congressional delegation were key in securing the funding for Wilkie’s research. It is among $20.4 million in defense spending allocated to area companies and organizations in the defense appropriations bill.
Marquette Welcomes the 2006 American Chemical Society Great Lakes Regional Meeting
The 2006 Great Lakes Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society will be held May 31 – June 2, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee. Faculty from the Marquette University Department of Chemistry are playing a leading role in the organization of the technical program.
- Dr. William Donaldson, Wehr Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, is the Program Chair for the meeting.
- Applications of Ionic Liquids in Analytical Science, organized by Dr. Chieu Tran, Professor; Protein Structure and Function, co-organized by Dr. Daniel Sem, Assistant Professor;
- Quantum and Semi-Classical Approaches to Molecular Dynamics, organized by Dr. Dmitri Babikov, Assistant Professor; and Supramolecular Chemistry and Electron Transfer, organized by Dr. Rajendra Rathore, Associate Professor.
In addition, a special symposium, Perspectives and Recent Advances in Organophosphorus Chemistry has been organized by Dr. Anthony Sommese (Nalco Company, Marquette Ph.D. alumnus) in recognition of the career of Dr. Sheldon Cremer, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. A banquet will be held in the Alumni Memorial Union on May 31, 2006 in honor of Professor Cremer. In addition, Marquette faculty, postdoctoral research associates, and graduate and undergraduate students will be making 40 research presentations at the meeting.

Dr. Kincaid received the 2005 Marquette University Chapter of Sigma Xi Distinguished Scientific Research Award. Scott Reid presents Jim with his award at the annual Marquette Sigma Xi Banquet in May 2005.
Professor Chieu D. Tran was recognized for his research accomplishments with:
- Chemistry professor Tran receives 2007 Way Klingler Faculty Fellowship Award
- The Lawrence G. Haggerty Award for Research Excellence, Marquette University’s award for distinguished career accomplishments in research.
- The American Chemical Society Milwaukee Section Award in November 2004

Professor Emeritus Kazuo Nakamoto was recognized by the Society for Applied Spectroscopy
This was for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of the field of spectroscopy and its applications in October 2004.
Dr. Scott Reid was promoted to the rank of Professor and Dr. Rajendra Rathore was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, both effective August 2005.
