Biography
Professor Hossenlopp received a B.A. degree in Chemistry from Colgate University in 1981, a M.A. degree in Education from Siena Heights College in 1982 and a Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry from Syracuse University in 1987. From 1987-1989 she was a postdoctoral research associate at Columbia University. She joined the faculty at Marquette University in August 1989. Professor Hossenlopp received a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Award in 1989 and the Marquette University John P. Raynor Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in 2003.
Research Fields
Our research involves both fundamental and applied studies in materials science. Current projects include: (a) characterization of structure/reactivity relationships of nanodimensional layered metal hydroxide materials, (b) adaptation of layered metal hydroxides for use as polymer fire retardant materials, and (c) chemical sensor development. Work on fire retardancy is performed in collaboration with Prof. Charles Wilkie’s group in the Marquette Department of Chemistry. Our group is also part of an interdisciplinary microsensor research team that includes the groups of Profs. Fabien Josse and Susan Schneider in the Marquette University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Examples of recent research projects include:
A. Anion Exchange Kinetics and Thermal Degradation of Hydroxy Double Salts and Analogous Layered Metal Hydroxides
B. Fire Retardancy Testing and Thermal Degradation Kinetics of Polymer Composites with Layered Metal Hydroxides
C. Microsensor Development using Shear-Horizontal Surface Acoustic Wave Devices; Spectroscopic and Computational Analysis of Analyte/Coating Interactions
D. Synthesis, Characterization, and Gas Sensor Testing of Nanocrystalline Mixed Sn(II)/Sn(IV) Oxide Powders
Chemoresitive gas sensors constructed from SnO/SnO2 powders in a polypyrrole composite film can be used to detect volatile organic species.
