Welcome to the Marquette University Chemistry web site.
Our department is well-equipped for education and research in the twenty-first century. We have faculty whose expertise lies in the areas of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and polymer science. In the research arena, we have some concentration of excellence in biochemistry, including bioanalytical chemistry, materials, synthesis, and spectroscopy. We are pleased to call attention to the recent renovation in our chemistry building. This renovation has brought us truly state-of-the-art laboratories for organic chemistry; additional renovation is planned for the future to upgrade the teaching laboratories for freshman chemistry and additional research space; information on future renovation plans is also available.
The department schedules seminars both on Tuesdays and Fridays, and at other times when we have visitors. We have two very special endowed seminars each year, the Habermann lecture and the Nakamoto lecture.
In the undergraduate section, there is a page showing the typical undergraduate curriculum, the undergraduate handbook, which highlights the many possibilities for undergraduate research, as well as a listing of the typical offerings for undergraduate students. Several of the faculty have websites for their undergraduate courses and these are also accessible under the listing of course offerings. We have an active SAACS, student affiliates of the American Chemical Society, group that sponsors some lectures and each year puts together a "Little Sibs" chemical magic show which is now an important feature of this weekend for brothers and sisters of current students. An undergraduate student advisory board is also an active component of the department.
In the graduate section of the site, you will find the graduate handbook, which explains the entire set of requirements for the M. S. and Ph. D. degrees, a listing of the graduate course offerings for the upcoming year, and extensive pages on the research interests of each research group. There is a graduate student advisory board which meets regularly to advise the department and arranges an annual holiday party as well as fall and spring picnics.
Of interest to both prospective undergraduate and graduate students is the resource section in which the facilities and instrumentation of the department is described and some old examinations are posted for your convenience. If more information on chemistry at Marquette University is desired, you may send an email to either muchem@mu.edu or michael.ryan@mu.edu.
