All students have had a course in biochemistry and most have completed a course in introductory microbiology.

Bulletin Course Description:

This course focuses on infectious agents of human medical importance and on the host-pathogen interaction. Topic areas include the characterization of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites as well as the etiology, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of selected diseases. Diseases caused by the Staphylococci, Streptococci, Neisseria, and Chlaemydia receive particular emphasis. Among the viral diseases, AIDS/HIV, Herpes, and hepatitis are emphasized.
