Course Objectives

By the end of the presentations, participants will be able to…

(Legal and Ethical)

  1. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the PTACB.
  2. Utilize the Wisconsin State PT Practice Act to answer practice related questions.
  3. Discuss how the Wisconsin State PT Practice Act is enforced.
  4. Discuss several approaches for ethical reflection.
  5. Utilize a step-wise procedure for working through ethical and legal cases.
  6. Differentiate between ethical and legal considerations.
  7. Use cases derived from clinical practice to determine legal and ethical boundaries and implications for practice.
  8. Link course discussions and cases to legal and ethical issues in one’s own practice.

(Evidence Based Practice)

Students will learn how to incorporate an evidence based approach to patient care in a busy clinical environment by

  1. Organizing and leading successful journal clubs and
  2. Examining the content of research articles in an efficient and systematic manner.

CEUs

6.0 CEU hours will be awarded by Marquette University to participants upon completion of this course. Course is approved by the WPTA.  Approval #12050

About the Speakers

Laurie KontneyLaurie B. Kontney, PT, DPT, MS is a Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Clinical Professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.  Laurie is a former member and chair of the Physical Therapist Affiliated Credentialing Board (PTACB) for Wisconsin.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1986, a Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in 1994 and a transitional DPT from Simmons College in 2006.  Laurie has been active in the APTA/WPTA at the district, state and national levels and is applying those experiences along with her teaching and clinical experiences to present and discuss the Wisconsin Physical Therapy Practice Act and it’s implications for clinical practice and public protection.  Laurie also teaches the ethics content in Marquette’s curriculum, and has taken additional courses on medical ethics as part of her doctoral training.

Dr. Sheila Schindler-IvensSheila Schindler-Ivens, PT, PhD is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University. She received her BS in PT from Marquette University and her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Iowa. She completed her post-doctoral training at Northwestern University in neural control of locomotion. Dr. Schindler-Ivens currently runs the neural control of movement laboratory at Marquette University and teaches Evidence Based Practice classes in the DPT curriculum. Dr. Schindler-Ivens is active as the faculty mentor for the Georgia State-Marquette Challenge co-sponsored by The University of Pittsburgh. The Challenge is a student run fundraising effort that supports physical therapy research and the further advancement of our profession. Dr. Schindler-Ivens was the first ever student coordinator of the Challenge when it was founded at Marquette University in 1989 as well as the recipient of the Department’s highest honor, the M. Pat Murray Award for Outstanding Physical Therapy Graduate.
